I let my paramedic cert expire in 2006 and have been kicking myself in the a** ever since. I have made up my mind I am gonna get it back. Am I gonna have to start from scratch or there any shortcuts I can take? I have not got much help from tdh over the phone. When did Texas change to national reg exams and what is different now they are involved? Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Call the state and ask them.

I don't know for a fact, but since its been 5 years I'm going to guess they will tell you to take the class again.

By the reg's, you have two options, however I will tell you that you really only have one. Get ready to go back through Paramedic school................

You can apply under equivalency as your cert has been expired for more than one year, however to do so, you will have to petition a department approved post-secondary institution and get them to sign off on your original education and work experience. Having been affiliated with a few of these institutions, I have yet to find one that will sign off on an equivalency application without significant skills checks and testing. You could opt for this route, but honestly, what kind of service are you going to offer your patients? No experience or education in 5 years does not equal any level of competence, much less proficiency, in my book...................

I agree and after five years out I'm sure a lot has changed. I just wish I didn't have to start at basic. I also think if a rn can challenge the test I should be able to also. Besides there a many a medic who are certified who haven't rode an ambulane in more than five years. (they where just smart enough to keep up with there ce's.

They have maintained their certification requirements. You didn't.

An RN has to meet specific requirements to challenge an EMT-P exam. Currency is one of them.
