OAKLAND — A former Berkeley firefighter facing 57 counts of misdemeanor possession of child pornography pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday in an Alameda County Superior courtroom.
Luis Ponce Jr., 49, is due back in court May 11 for a preliminary hearing, said Alameda County prosecutor John Creighton. At the conclusion of the hearing, a judge will decide whether the state has enough evidence to bring Ponce to trial.
Ponce, a paramedic supervisor with the Berkeley Fire Department for 17 years, was arrested in January after a colleague discovered a computer disc containing child pornography in a station computer he had been using. Later, police discovered at least 100 computer discs containing child pornography and 60 pairs of girls panties in his fire station locker.
