I saw this article on firehouse.com today. Has anyone heard anything about this?

..DALLAS, TEXAS -- EMS Expo and Firehouse Central opened Wednesday with some surprising information about the effects of estrogen on cardiac arrest patients and victims of traumatic head injuries.

Haven't heard of anyone using it yet, but the concept debuted last year. The research is several years old.

The reason it is being pushed for EMS is because it has been demonstrated that the earlier the administration, especially for neuro injuries the better the outcomes.

Similar to the idea for steroids, but steroids turned out not to work.

Did you want to know the mechanisms?

I clicked on this, expecting to find an article I needed to share with my husband, who tends to snark on women in the fire service and in EMS. Sadly, no go. Now I'm happily sitting back to learn about the mechanism. Thanks, Vene.

I have heard of the concept that estrogen may have some beneficial effects in some cases, I did not know they were talking about bringing it to EMS. One of my friends is a neuroscience major, so I hear about strange brain things.

Dr Ornato in Richmond VA talked about it a few years ago. His interest in it had to do with the fact that female cardiac arrests go down after puberty and then back up after menopause and they think that estrogen has something to do with it. Unfortunately I only talked to him about it for a few minutes two years ago when I asked him if anything new was coming to ACLS and that’s all I can remember.

various female sex hormones, particularly estrodiol, inhibit thromboxane A2 and increase NO production.

This thread is about a newer use of the therapy.
