Hello all, i have recently joined the EMTLife forum as i am a newly NREMT. I have spent the past 2-3 weeks since getting certified searching for volunteer positions in and around Indianapolis, IN. I know that all of Indianapolis uses Indianapolis EMS where i went to school but i have been searching all of the surrounding counties and cities within an hour drive. I am having the absolute hardest time finding any volunteering opportunities. Since I'm NREMT i have started just looking into driving out of state for a weekend month and putting in a shift or two since its been so hard to find.
Does anyone have an pointers on finding volunteering positions?
I know when i have looked at fire stations they are looking for EMT's with Fire 1 and sometimes Fire 2 certifications. From what i have gathered that takes just about as long as EMT training 6-8 months. If i need to i am willing to do that as well.
I own a small business with the rest of the company and partners in Detroit, MI. Im just doing this to help out and give back. Never thought it would be so hard to find a place to volunteer.
Thanks in advance,
Ian

I cannot add anything about local options.

However, it's important to note that your NREMT certification is not a license to practice in any state. You'll need to gain a state certification/license in any state that you wish to volunteer your time.

Ok, so the other states are out i guess. but i am Certified in Indiana.
i am confused though, they did tell us that with the NREMT cert you are able to practice (whats the point then in the NREMT if you can't practice in states that are a part of the national registry?...either way, thats not my current problem. I just can't find anywhere to volunteer or at least somewhere that will help me find a place to volunteer.

Volunteer EMS simply doesn't exist in some areas. I don't know anything about your area, but volunteers are going the way of the dinosaurs in much of the country.

Why not look for part time employment if you're interested? Look into getting licensed in your specific state (like Tigger mentioned, NREMT is not a license to practice), then start looking around. EMT positions on 911 ambulances aren't easy to come by in all areas, but good luck to you. Hopefully someone comes along with more specific information to offer.

Most states accept the NREMT for initial certification. Often the process consists of little more of than filling out a form, providing your CPR and NR card, and writing the state a check.

I am certified in Indiana to practice.
I don't know what part time consists of but I run a small business and only have enough time for 1-2 shifts a month. That is why I was hoping for a volunteer position.
I guess I'll just keep asking around.
Thanks guys

Check out this link and search for the word 'volunteer'. I don't know if any of these are near you but there are about 159 instances of volunteer. There are probably a bunch on there that do not use the word volunteer but still are volunteer or at least combined.

There are plenty of paid opportunities in Indiana.

Seals hires part-timers. IEMS has some part-timers, though you must complete academy and your probationary period (6 months) before being eligible to request part-time.
