Hey guys,

So I'm trying to do research this summer on the effects of violence on EMT performance in Bogota Colombia since Colombia has the highest homicide rates in the world. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on how to measure EMT performance. I was thinking of things along the line of quality or hours of sleep per night, number of years working as an EMT.

Thanks!

Well it depends on what you mean by performance...

Years is retention. I think that could be a good study - i.e. retention of paramedics in violent areas versus non-violent areas. However, it's not really performance.

Hours or quality of sleep is related to stress and perhaps job satisfaction. Another good study, but a different one. You could do this with a survey of providers. "Stress of violent situations on paramedics and their sleep patterns" or something like that.

Performance would be measured by some quantitative like IV start successes, or ETT success rate, or run review for protocol compliance. You could also measure qualitatively with a survey or something like that.

This is probably needed to be performed but will be very hard and lengthy to perform right as per scientifically and academically. I suggest discussing the idea with a psychology/ Socialology department of your local University. Many grad or doctoral candidates maybe looking for research project.

Remember, qualitative versus quantitative or mixed with blind studies, and so many variables will have to be explored.

Have you come up with a specific research question? That will really help because without that it is hard for others to know what exactly you want to look at.

Consider looking for comparable research on the effect of the violence on other health professions, ie ER staff. Try Medline, PubMed, etc.
