I work since 21 years in the german paramedic/ambulance service. After many vocations in the USA and having a real love to the people of this country, I was wondering if there is a chance for a job as non emergency rig driver to bring patients for one place to another ? Does anyone know if they accept my german documents or is a american ecucation a condition? Thanks in advance for your responses.

I am sure you would need to take the EMT exam for whatever state you would like to work in but other than that it shouldnt be a problem as long as you can speak and read english well.

Contact the EMS office for the state where you would like to work and see if your education can be accepted. They will then assist you in setting up the necessary test to get your EMT or Paramedic certification which will then allow you to get another certification or license to work in that state. In the U.S., each state has its own see of requirements and levels of certfication/licensing. The training is based on the U.S. DOT National Standard Curriculum and many states use the National Registry for testing. Many programs from other countries will excede the U.S. DOT National Standard Curriculum. The state office will evaluate your transcript on an individual basis to make that determination.

Here is a link to the NREMT and each state EMS office.

There are also jobs for just drivers for wheel chair and special transport services which you could obtain if you have the appropriate driver's license. They usually don't require any medical certification except maybe CPR.

On the educational front, you may have to do an EMT course. Put 800 away and expect 3-6 months depending.

The bigger problem is Visas. Get in touch with the embassy. It may take some time!!

Thanks for all your informations. Yes, the real problem is to get the visa. They told me if a interested company wants me they could arrange to get for me the visa. But that is not easy so the most using american people for such jobs. By the way, working fulltime as just a driver for a transportation company would that feed a family or could that only be a parttime job ? I know that depends on state and company, but maybe some on you have some experiences ??

Hi Heiko,

Not to burst your bubble here, but while the information you have is TECHNICALLY correct on the work sponsorship visa (THINK it's a H-2, could be wrong), you won't find many companies that are willing to do all the paperwork.

The reason behind this is the company has to prove to the Department of Homeland Security / Immigration Nationalisation Services that they cannot find an americian citizen / perment resident alien with the same qualifications within a reasonable timeframe.

And in the worst case scenario, if the DPH in the state you are going to won't recognise your out of country cert, and you would have to do the EMT course to get employment, then the company would find it very hard to justify bringing on a foreign EMT with sponsorship.

On the good news front though, in MA anyway you can transfer your driving licence to a MA one (Only country in the EU they take for whatever reason! I had to re-do my entire licence!)

But good luck, and I wish you well!

Thanks for your interesting information. By the way, you burst the bubble. ^_^ Again thanks for all the answers.

Sorry about that! But I think it's better to get the best information from someone who has done it! But if you go to DHS you can apply for a visa. With the economy in ruin here, not as many people are applying anymore.

As a side note, it took me about 8 months to get my permanent residency and 6 months to get my work permit. But I had a good lawyer.
