I recently got my EMT certification and have applied for a job in the county. I was asked to come in for an assessment including a physical fitness test, written and oral exams, and an interview. Typically, about how long is the written for something like this and what would be the best things for me to study over the next few days? Same question for the oral section. They have told me what exactly to do for the physical fitness portion so I am not worried about that. I just really want to be prepared. I am nervous and excited and want to make sure I have all of my ground covered. Any advice on the interview portion would also be much appreciated! Thank you!

Study everything.

I don't mean to sound like a smart-a$$. But if you do get the job, your patients expect you to know everything... you don't get a heads up for each call before hand so you can "cram" for that clinical problem. And, honestly, if you don't know your stuff, don't apply until you actually do. Good luck!

We pull our written exam right off a NREMT practice test. At the end of the training period we give another test based on our protocols.
For the interview just remember you are applying for a job that takes a certian level of maturity. I can't beleive the way some people come in my office looking for a job with their pants hanging down somewhere around their thighs! we are looking for professional demenior and work ethic. I have hired some pretty green EMT's that had solid work history and a good interview. We can fix "green", hell we can fix poorly trained. We can't fix bad attitude, stupidity, or lazyness.

Do some research about the service you are appying for. Some version of "Why do you want to work here?" is going to be asked. "Uuuhhh I need to get out of my moms basement" is not what we are looking for.

"I've heard about your (fill in the blank) and would like to be a part of your program"

" I like this area and have heard good things about your services public education program. I'd like to be a part of that kind of community centered service."

Find out what your prospective employers service is doing and it will tell you if you want to work for them, communicate that desire to be part of their service and they will want you as part of the team.

EMSBoss,

I would never consider applying for a job if I didn't think I was capable of executing the requirements or tasks of that job. In no way do I feel that I am unprepared or cramming for this opportunity, I am just looking for some guidance from those more experienced than myself. I am looking for encouragement from fellow EMT's out there.

TxParamedic,

Thank you so much for your advice. I really appreciate your input!
