im going to emt-b class soon and im just wondering what i will be doing when i finish the class. will i just be carrying stuff around while i watch the paramedics do all the work in the ambulance? or will i actually be doing hands on, direct patient stuff? i want to do hands on stuff but i dont want to spend all that time in the classroom if im just going to be watching the paramedic work

Depends on where you work. Where are you? What kind of service do you want/expect to work for?

i really have no idea. ive just started thinking about this. maybe a volunteer station or maybe a private company. would there be any difference between those 2?

What kind of hands on stuff are you expecting to do. You should get to do Plenty of hands on stuff, like the stuff stuff the medic doesn't want to do.

Well, there's a big difference between running 911 calls and IFT (interfacility transports), and there is a difference between volunteer and paid. You should search/read here and then decide what you want to do.

However, the attitude of 'I don't want to just watch the medic work" is the wrong way to start. If you're with a medic who likes to teach, you'll learn a LOT. And yeah, in the beginning, you'll be carrying stuff.
