I'm relatively new to CO and for some reason no company will hire me because I do not have IV or EKG Certs. I came from a state where that was exclusively a Paramedic skill.

What agencies will hire without these certs? I am already employed by the federal government in a perdium position on the National Medical Response Team. I have all my C.E.U.s up to date (except my NREMT expired in March). My Colorado license expires 8/2010.

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe an IFT service? Or ski patrol... otherwise most everyone expects you to have those certs.

What's the problem with getting them? Just go learn. Go get your EKG and IV (that's 4 credit hours at one of the myriad of community colleges in Denver)

Be warned, a lot of agencies want you to be NREMT. There's no respect for CO's con-ed requirements. 36 hours every 3 years? Beyond pathetic...

Lucid should be here in a minute and she'll have better info;

But I'm sure CC's around you offer phlebotomy.

Etatro,
I would recommend that you get you IV and EKG. IV is a non intensive 20-50 hour course & EKG is longer but not that hard either. Summit had a great idea with you taking the course.

My first instinct would be that you were under 21 but your profile cured that. A lot of services want you to be EKG & IV, due to the fact that you start lines and place 12 leads when working with the medics. (Thats all you do for awhile.) Due to the economy alot of people may have been in the hiring process. (You might just not have been selected.)

For Aurora area, Rural Metro runs the transports, they are the cart horses for FD. FD medics have on scene authority. Just keep trying AMR, Rural Metro, Pridemark, and other are always in need of Basics.

There is not so much as a problem getting them, like I said I keep up on my C.E.U.s, right now it is the cost. Since I only get a small stipend for being a pastor, and no full-time secular employment I have to pinch the pennies. I did see where Code Blue CPR offers an ALS EKG Certification for $75.00 (Perfect for credentialed health-care providers who either must or wish to supplement their training, this comprehensive course presents information on: Basic electrophysiology normal ECG measurements basic arrhythmias This course is 4.0 hr and a certificate of completion is given), though I haven't contacted them to find out if this is the correct cert for EKG for my scope of practice.

I understand that a lot of agencies want us to NREMT, right now I am just short of suing the NREMT of my re-certification. They never sent out the re-certification paper work for one and for two they said that what I use my skills does not meet their requirements. I'm a federal employee who meets twice a month for training and can be deployed at any time and yet they claim that is not good enough. :glare::glare::glare:

Yah tell me about it 36 hours, I came from a state where you had to have 50 hours a year, and being a EMT-B was just that a basic... You either where an EMT-B or an EMT-P and EMT-B could not do I.V., or EKG.

What's the problem with getting them? Just go learn. Go get your EKG and IV (that's 4 credit hours at one of the myriad of community colleges in Denver)

CO raised it to a whopping 50hrs a while back. A lot, I know. I can't think of anywhere (that will be worth your time) around here that will hire w/o IV and stuff. Maybe with the stipulation of getting it soon after you begin, though I really don't know.

Yah...I'm looking into the certs...200 for IV, 200 for EKG both at St. Anthony's... CCA and Health One want more...

St. A's is very good.

DG might be cheaper (through CCD but at DG). I did my EKG with them. Outstanding!

That's just for EMT-Is and Medics. EMT-B is still 36 every 3.
