I'm currently knocking out classes for my EMS AAS through NVCC in northern VA. I live around an hour and fifteen minutes with no traffic from their Medical Education Campus in Springfield, VA, which is where I'd be required to take the two classes that can't be done via asynchronous distance learning. I live near where VA, WV, and MD meet. Are there any other schools that offer an EMS AAS near Matinsburg WV, Winchester/Front Royal VA, or west of Frederick MD?

I've found Lord Fairfax CC in Middletown, VA. It's less than 20 mins from home. Does anyone know anything about their program, and/or how it compares to the NVCC program?

Poorly, if your talking about the initial education. It was worth it to me to drive the hour and a half to Springfield from southwest of Front Royal to be in NVCCs program. Keep in mind this was 7 years ago too.

If it's just for the degree and you already have the certification, I suppose it doesn't really matter

Edit: I see you are just doing the degree, I took a bunch of general ed classes in Middletown and it was an ok campus. The EMS program was based at Faquier though.

Faquier is still a lot closer than Springfield, even f it's all the way down by 28.

My primary motivation is for promotional purposes, and also to be marketable after retirement, with several degrees such as a BA in AMS, EM, Healthcare Admin, or whatever. Some of these classes count towrds a nursing degree, which is my next step if I can figure out how to attend class with a rotating schedule. The other thing is what I experienced while working with my first partner as a new medic. He had a BS in something or other (can't remember), but his knowledge of the human body just blew me away. He advised me to go back to college, to learn what he did, but it wasn't the right time back then. I had a wife, an infant child, and a bunch of debt. OT and per diem gigs were the priority. It wasn't until this past year that I felt it was time to take Joe up on his advice. As such, I'd rather enter into a strong program, even if it's only for the classes they require after taking into account my EMT-P cert and experience. I know that the sciences required for an EMS AAS are the bottom of the barrel so to speak, but I plan to progress past those courses soon after completing the EMS AAS.

Thanks for your input. What was it about Lord Fairfax CC that you found less than desireable?

At the time I was up there the guy running the program had a less than stellar reputation. PM if you want more details.

The other thing is NVCC was probably one of the top two programs in the state when I went through, the other being Roanoke. I pretty much credit that program as a big part of the reason I have the level of understanding I do today.

I'm gonna take a stab and say your in the greater "W" area? If so, your with in spitting distance of my old stomping grounds.

I will say that I always like the medics that come from the Roanoke school, is it Jefferson College of Health Sciences now that they changed the name?

I know it's out of the question for you right now, but it belongs in a thread about AAS options in VA. That's a pretty good school.
