Duty to Act Questions

Not employed as EMT or primarily as a responder.

Firetender has a good viewpoint. Of course, the rest of your kids would be safe and managed while you were responding?
As a matter of fact, how would the rest of the kids be handled if a "classmate" were injured? Hustle em off, pull them aside? Ask your boss before it happens.
Kudos for working with kids during your summer!

We have 10 staff members, each are first aid and cpr certified... i'm just an over achiever I guess

Were I faced with an off duty medical emergency and the on-duty staff were at a lower level (say lifeguard), i'll stay out of the way (or assist as needed) so long as the injury is something that they are trained to treat. Remember, its likely in this situation that neither of you are operating with any sort of live medical oversight, so essentially what you are able to do for the patient is entirely dependent on your level of training.

I'm not going to tell the lifeguard how to rescue a drowning swimmer, but I do know how to spinally immobilize a patient in a pool after a dive accident. If there's a cardiac arrest we work as a team, if its bee sting we hope they have an Epipen. If you're an EMT, you've probably seen more real emergencies than some bandaid brigadier at a summer camp or a lifeguard at the community pool, and they'll likely be happy to have your help or let you take the reins if the need arises.
