Looking for some ideas on keeping track of expiration dates on drugs in the drug box on our rigs. Any tips or tricks or systems you have found that work well. I would like to avoid more paper forms or anymore computer programs if possible. Want to keep it simple for the medics on the rigs but at the same time keep things from being missed.

Put a label on the outside of the box that lists all the drugs expiring in the next 2 months. +/- labeling the specific vials that are expiring soon with a piece of tape. That makes it easier for people to use the specific drugs that are going to expire soon.

Check the whole box once a month and update the labels.

If you have compliance amongst your staff, the system need not be more complicated than Remi suggests.

My company panders to the lowest common denominator. We audit the drugs daily. I don't mean the narcotics. I mean the whole drug box, line by line, vial by vial, daily; and even doing it that way finding expired drugs in the box is a regular occurrence...

We do it monthly. Drugs that will be expiring this month get a red tag and drugs that expire next month get a yellow tag (so we know to use those ones first). A lot of our bags are used 24/7 by different crews so this seems to be the easiest way.

I like to two color sticker idea, seems fairly simple and easy to get compliance compared to some other options out there. We have a problem with compliance over time, the more work involved the less compliance we see. Thanks for the ideas.

We have to write the expiration date down on everything from medications to catheters to every single alcohol prep pad that is in our bag.

We just do a check of the entire truck on the 1st of each month and pull off anything expired.

Operative IQ
Operative IQ does drug date tracking? We don't use it for that, we just order supplies with it. We have to date everything every month by hand.

We use Op IQ, for all our supply tracking, including listed expiration dates. In addition our drug boxes come with an expiration date and what the drug is that is expiring first. Also, our Logistics person has all our bins in the cabinets sealed to show what is supposed to be there, is.
