Can someone tell me what the protocol is for a person who is unconscious but breathing after being rescued from the water? I'm guessing it is CPR--anything else. I am not an EMT tech--I'm a writer. Thanks much!

CPR is cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. We use it for folks that are not breathing AND have no pulse.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_resuscitation

If the patient is breathing, they WILL have a pulse, because blood needs to be moving though the body for someone to breathe.

If someone isn't breathing, they will get "rescue breathing" ... we breathe for them.

If they ARE breathing... we do what we can to support them - hypothermia would be our biggest concern.
