That is going to depend upon the agency. At mine (all vollie), we do have some people that are just drivers. For the most part, they are people who are retired but still want to stay on the department. In addition to driving, they are responsible for pump operations and maintaining the vehicles.

I have also seen some agencies that won't allow people to be just drivers. The best advice I can give you is to contact the agency and see what they say.

As a volley I have always welcomed all help as a driver you can free up someone else to give patient care. How ever I have heard a lot of others say that if you are just there to drive you are taking up space that someone else could be using. I am not going to start an argument about that as I see the point of both theories. The best advice I can give you is to talk to the department to get their take on it before you make a decision. Best of luck to you

in ma, both people on the bus have to be certified emt's.

It depends on the state AND the agency. I work for a medic level service, and some of our partners are drivers, some are basics, every now and then some are medics.
