I was looking at doing this at my university next year (as they take care of training you, so it's essentially a free EMT-B class). Essentially, it's 24 volunteer hours a month plus special events, etc. Anyone have any experiences?

I do. We run ~20 hours a week, one overnight included. 2 rigs, ALS, and fully student run. We are primary to campus and 2nd into 3 major cities. We also have many tertiary towns. I'd def recommend it. You'll get great experience and meet many new people.

I cover varsity athletic events and practices (mostly division 1 men's hockey) for my school's sports medicine department. I had to pay for my basic class but I am paid at work. Obviously it's a little bit different than traditional EMS but could be a good option if the volunteering doesn't work out. There's a lot of overlap between sports medicine and EMS and I get a lot more (free) education than most EMS providers get from their employer. Plus I have a medical director and other doctors that will personally teach me assessments and skills and encourage their use them despite being out of the traditional basic scope.

Thanks for the replies all. Now I can finally send PMs because I have 5 posts .
