Hello all i have a question to ask. I am an fto for a small company in so cal and i was wondering how i could improve our field training when it comes to new hires. Do you guys think a self evaluation questioneer would help ftos get a better understanding of the new hires before they go into the field? If so what type of questions should i add?? Thanks for any feed back

I think self-evaluation, if done honestly, along with a preceptor's evaluation using the same tool, presents a very good learning opportunity for the preceptee/new hire. If done right, it does help to drive a more honest evaluation of what one's own performance is on any given call and therefore also drives one to improve in those areas that are seen to be deficient.

As to content, if you already have a good tool that the FTOs use to evaluate new hires, a very similar tool, that uses the same point by point pattern should be used by the new hire to evaluate themselves. Ideally, the "scores" should merge to become reasonably close.

We do have a evaluation sheet for our day to day field training thats great for us to eval the new hire but what i wanted to see is if done correctly a self evaluation prior to going into the field could help with getting a better understanding of their strenghts and weaknesses to try to get a rough idea of how to best train this new hire.

You should have some idea from the applicant/new hire if your process included a self-eval somewhere or if the process included some kind of scenario process and the evaluator took notes. Otherwise, I would think that you could modify the current field evaluation sheet to ask the new hire about how they think they're able to perform. It still will look kind of like part of an interview process however, since they're already hired, it should be stressed that this is a training tool to help you determine how best to meet their needs and ultimately get them to a level of competency that you need them to be at in order to turn them loose on patients as "regular" crew.

It's been many years since I've dealt with this stuff so I can only offer general guidelines vs specific stuff... and I also don't know a thing about your service and what you're looking for.

Thanks for your reply i have a vague idea of what to include to this self evaluation

I might have a rating system (1 to 5 stars) as to how they see themselves in regards to various areas of focus in the job:
Clinical knowledge
Protocols
Vehicle Ops
Customer Service
Writing Skills
Etc...

I would allow a space for each to allow for comments (but not require them)

The one open-ended question I would have is "What area of focus do you feel need the most work? (be specific)"

Have the "pre" self-assessment be one side of the paper and have a "post" evaluation which assesses whether they feel the FTO process met their needs.
