I have never worked out there but im curious to know...considering their basic education. Do they do much? Or are they just support and drivers of the ambulance?!?!

Due to some silliness, FDNY staffs BLS (EMT + EMT) and ALS (Medic + Medic) units (in addition to a couple of specialty units, which are also not mixed between ALS and BLS providers). So, yes, BLS staff in the FDNY EMS respond to many a call. After all, only 25% of medical calls (2011 data) were deemed as necessitating an ALS response.

And, naturally, because NYC's system is totally nuts, yes, there are also BLS and ALS voluntary (and volunteer - these are different from voluntary) 911 units.
