Dealing with transients

Was the shelter in your town?

I would have given the guy a ride. Rather take him to the shelter now than be woken at 2am for a hypothermic at the bus stop or something. We had a patient who was not feeling well but didnt have a ride to the his doctors across town nor the money to pay for a cab, he was an indigent old man and his daughter who normally drives him was at work and couldnt get off. He called us, we went, understood his problem, he signed the RMA and we took him to the doctors where his daughter picked him up later.

She baked us a nice plate of cookies for Christmas, so he got the ideal care, we got cookies, she didnt have to take off work and lose pay. Everybody wins

Let that heart grow you damn Grinch

are you municipal based or private?

I ask because I used to work for a private agency and If I pulled something like that, My appendages would be on the chopping block. as they have "Non Emergency Services" to perform these tasks. its hard cause you try to be a good person and help where you can but with the bean counters watching could make a mess.

I've given a couple people, generally older folks, a lift back to their homes if they aren't too distant. If that is all it takes for me to keep them out of the ED, I'm happy doing it. I just don't say anything to dispatch at all, pretend I'm still at scene while we give them a lift.

My job is not to deliver transients to hospitals so they can bail (essentially a free ride)
Despite whatever misconceptions you have about your job, apparently the service you work for DOES think it's your job. So take the guy to the hospital, quit whining and realize all of those who have come before you have played the same game. Comes with the territory.
