OK. I finally did it - I've completed the class work for the AHA BLS (CPR) Instructor course. All I have to do is teach a class this Wedensday and I've got the cert.

Any advice? also, anyone have suggestions on how to "make money" as an instructor?

Thanks,

Jon

This is what I do.

The hospital I teach through pays me $28 an hour to teach for them when they need me and when they don't I set up my own classes. I usually just put a flyer up at my college, apt complex, and grocery store. Depending on how many people call I set up classes and charge a reasonable amount over what the supplies cost me.

It's not enough to live on, but it's a nice monthly pick-me upper when the bills come in.

When you set up your own course, where do you get the manakins for practice etc?

I want to figure out where I can get an EMT Instructor course so I can teach CEs and assist in EMT courses.

Our EMS training station and the hospital rents out the equipment to instructors (AHA instructors). And for those certified with the red cross, they rent the equipment from thier centers.

And check with your captain for AHA courses, My captain trained me. Nothing against red cross, but since I'm already dealing with our EMS dept, it's easier.

Wingnut is right about the ARC. If you are doing training on your own you basically rent the video and manikins and then pay the chapter a small fee for them to print up the little cards.

Of course, if you really want to make this a business for yourself, you can purchase the video and a set of your own manikins. However, you will have to decon and prepare the manikins yourself. I don't know about you, but after an 8 or 9 hour class the last thing I wanted to do was taken another hour or two to clean them up.

Making a profit is possible, but it will take a lot of work and a lot of time.

I'd take the "buy it yourself" approach, but AHA books are EXPENSIVE.

I might buy them next time around - after the new guidelines come out, but I'm not going to buy all the stuff now and replace it next year.

If anyone has an extra anne or 2, I'll take them off your hands, cheap.... :D
