Hi guys,

As an EMT how do you handle problems with your superiors? For example poor skills: inability to start IVs. Lack of motivation: not doing station duties and taking credit for tasks not done. Poor compliance with chain of command: calling the hospital and telling them to use an air ambulance rather than our ground units.

You can try doing a lot of shift trades (if that's an option) and having word spread about on its own from everyone who works with him (without you having to open your mouth)...probably works mainly in the smaller systems...

Just stick it out with a smile. If they are that bad it is only so long before management figures it out.

I'd document

It may not go anywhere, but if push comes to shove (like if you get evidence of compromised patient care) it's good to have something on hand that is accurate and lists incidents (date, time, witnesses too if you get pressed) so you have a case built to present to the proper people -- which do not necessarily have to be within management of the company. Assess risk to patients first, then yourself.

Be careful who you talk to about it. Make sure you have solid ground to stand on before you sling accusations, believe me on this.

If he's got some seniority, chances are he has a sewing circle of friends that may even extend to management. even if you're in the right, you may end up with a target on your back.
