Computer Glitch Cause Emergency Workers Problems

Des Moines, March 27, 2005 -The Des Moines emergency dispatch system is not working properly. A new multi-million dollar system was supposed to be up and running last July, but the upgrade has hit a glitch and nobody can say for sure if the bugs can be worked out.

At a cost of one $1.7 million every vehicle used by the Des Moines fire and police department was upgraded with a new computer system. It's called a mobile data system- a way to better communicate with the dispatch center. But seven months later- both departments will tell you- that system is unreliable.

gee... sounds like Philly's radio system.

It often has issues, and at least monthly, they switch to a backup system for a day. Philly PD often reports outages of 2-4 hours for some VERY SMALL areas, leaving officers without communications.

Scary.
