While posting somewhere else, I was wondering....in a tight situation, how do you ensure you clear your rear?

......................................................

A while back we were at a 12 hour stucture fire. When we were leaving, and all obviously exhausted, my driver had to negotiate this crazy tight turn, trying to not take out a fence on the bridge we had to go over. It required going forward a couple inches, backing up...going forward a few more, backing up (Isn't is funny how those turns are not that bad when you are responding to the scene and all 4 sides of the house are on fire)

So anyway, we are doing this and I am keeping close eye on the fence. Well as he is backing up I heard the gut wrenching "thunk, clunk, crash"

As I turned and looked, he had backed into a car that was not there when we started this process. Turns out the Editor In Cheif/Owner of our local fish wrapper had parked behind us to get some pics of the ?foundation, ?pile of debris, ?us trying to get out of there??? either way, she parked a WEEEE bit to close.

So we call the Chief, who calls the Dep Chief, who calls the *** Chief, who all came and took care of the paperwork. And the whole way back to the station we were both like awww man...I had decided I would turn my stuff in.....So we get back there and everybody that had been on scene with us was standing around and as we pull in, they all clap and give high fives....Of all people to hit, we had to hit her. Oh well...lesson learned...she won't be parking behind any more firetrucks, and I will continously clear my rear before letting my driver procede!!

Clear your rear.... see, I thought this was going to be about something else.

Anytime a truck or rig is backing up it's smart just to have someone pop out and help guide you back.

Yeah, definitly thought this was about something else :D

Anyway, it's mandatory for the emt here to get out of the truck and radio to the driver while backing up. I guess we've had one too many scrapes in the past.

Oh yeah, I thought the subject would involve a lot of water...

The service has insurance. If we hit something, the lawyers will blame someone else, a new code will be passed. :P However, the rear of the bus has a camera, and there is a monitor in the front, we have a "near object alarm", and the rear has large one-way windows. I've never hit anything, except an embankment, a light pole, a few parking meters... Unit 2... a large cascade tank... a fire extinguisher (top broke off, powder everywhere).. and a couple deer.

Okay, so maybe I've taken out a few stationary objects.

that reminded me of a story a few years back we had parking in front of our station across the street well one of our now lt's was pulling the engine out and somehow misjudged and smashed in the back of this little old ladys car she was soo upset we all felt so bad for her later on the guy who hit her car comes out and was like what didnt even scratch the engine

and a couple deer.
We have a MONSTER brush-guard on our newest rig. Given that the truck went in-service as one of our frontline Type III's went to last rig out s/p Ambulance Vs. Deer collision, and already many comments on said rig not being Deer-proof  :D

So now the new rig IS deer proof. well, it at least has a good rino brushguard to deflect the deer....

Us... Go off subject like that??? COULDN'T POSSIBLY HAPPEN!!!

  :D

well if your talking about moving a fire apparatus, dont you folks have like 4 firefighters in ther??? one of you can hop out a make sure it clear

in our new truck we have a system. among other things, every time you back up, theres a little button on the back of the truck that has to be pushed, thereby guaranteeing that someone is back there

In an ideal world yes, there would be at least 3-4 minimum. Being volunteer, I ran many calls all by my little self. Now if the word "fire" came over the pager, there would be at least 2 show up, but a lot of times thats it.

When I volunteered, we had an SOP that no apparatus left if it was not staffed to be operated. Five for initial attck; that's 2 on the initial attack truck, and 3 on the aerial. Interior attack aside, you need at least two people to secure a water supply and pull a line. And no apparatus moved backward w/out a spotter, and only after a walk around to ensure the compartments were shut and the bays were fully opened. That person was also responsible to reconnect the exhaust line (or get a new one from storage). Sometimes the exhaust line doesn't release, and it falls off along the road.

Backing accidents rank 4th in the nation among firefighter deaths. Pennsylvania leads in this particular type of preventable accident.
