So i have no idea if you guys can even help me or not, Going to be calling our local Paramedics when we get home from holidays but just thought i would try asking any ways. On the 10th we got a call from school saying that our 2 year old daughter fell of a chair at daycare, and they thought she hurt her neck cause she was holding it and screaming. Turned out if was only a broken clavicle. Mommy mode kicked in and me and my husband were going a little to fast on our way home and hit ice and slammed in to a cement barracad,(Spelling) going about 80km ish. Have about 2000 damage to our car. Now my question is SGI ( insurance company) said we are to talk to the local paramedics about weather or not we need to replace our carseats or not. Have heard that accidents can put stress on them and they need to be replaced. We had a stage one infant carrier thats about 2 years old and a 3in1 carar seat thats about a year and half old, in the car at the time of the accident but no kids in them. They were both rear facing if that means any thing. So my question is would they need to be replaced or would they still be safe since it was only a mild accident

There's a forum for this: www.car-seats.com

The manufacturers of the seats have recommendations that vary from seat to seat, but with your description of the collision, the seats definitely need to be replaced, and the insurance company should pay for them.

Have fun car seat shopping!

They were in the car. The seats are designed to flex and absorb energy during a collision, to lessen the amount of energy conveyed to the child. They flexed in this crash, and the next time they could flex again, or flex and break, or or or. They should be replaced. Besides 80 kph is about 35-40 mph right? That's no slouchy wreck, in any event.

Let me know if you need any help picking a new one...that eddie bauer 3-in-1 is not the greatest seat in the world- it only harnesses to 40 lbs, and can't be used on the top harness slots in the forward-facing position, and is a crappy booster.

I could go on and on about that seat. I think Babies R Us makes a special premium off that one, the way their people push it. Seriously.

Anyway- just taking this opportunity to talk about one of my favorite topics. I love car seats.

Should you replace your child car set or not, keep them safe or not??

I known this is going to start out like it does not relate, but follow me here and it will all add up. When I took my MSC (motorcycle safety course) they told us if we even drop out helmets we needed to replace it because the integrity of the helmet has been compromised. Since your helmet is to protect your head, then that is the most important thing you need to keep safe.

Now lets look at the car seat for your child, would you rather place him/her in something that has been compromised and hope that it will work again and might kill said child since it has already been in a crash once. Or would you err on the side of caution, get your child a new car seat knowing for sure that the integrity is still in tacked, doing all that you can to make sure that you keep your child safe??

I hope I did not loss you, but I hope you get what I am trying to say. GET A NEW CAR SET, that is what I would do if I were you. I hope that I do not come off sounding rude, but I have a huge passion for helping kids and making sure they stay safe. That is one of the reason I am getting into medicine.

Yes replace them. I was in a roll over and had my infant restrained in one and the spare in the front seat with me. Both were compromised, the one with the baby the worst but it kept him safe which was what it was meant to do. I did extensive research when we replaced our seats and would be glad to help you. Feel free to PM me if you want and I can get you live chat information if you would like a more real time conversation.

Wow ever really thought of it that way, when you put it like that it makes total scene.

The car seat manufacturer should be able to guide you on this. Personally get new seats and put them on the insurance bill. They shouldn't argue about it as replacing seats will be cheaper than a future lawsuit from an injury caused by a failed seat.
Check to see if there is a "Babies to Boosters" program near you. They specialize in teaching about car seats and their proper installation.

Well thanks guys talked to the local paramedics and they will not replace them for us, so we have to pay for them our self since they are saying the point in contact was not with our near the car seats it was the front end so it is fine. even thought we nailed the cement hard and 2000 damage. but they said its up to us to waste money on new ones cause they SHOULD be fine. key word being Should.
So i dont no they wont give us a letter to give to our insurance saying they need to be replaced so looks like we are going to have to fork out money for new ones our self.

The insurance company is not the final word.

I am not familiar with anywhere else but NYS.

Try calling your provinces insurance department, if there is a consumer affairs division, or if you are in AAA (does Canada have it ? ).

May not be worth your time, but you could perhaps arbitrate that decision.

I'm asking about this on the car seat forum. There are lots of Canadian techs over there, who will have facts to deal with. The trouble with this situation is that the "local paramedics" are not necessarily car seat techs, and may not have accurate facts in this situation.

Good call Dana. I was going to ask my friend up in Quebec but that forum may have people closer to Where the OP lives.

This is what the tech at the car seat forum posted:

When to replace a child seat
•Always replace a child seat that was in a car that had a crash. Even if your child wasn’t in the child seat when the crash happened, the child seat could be damaged.

I wrote to my ins. co after a relatively low velocity rear-ender (I was the third car up front, had $1K damage to my van's bumper). My letter quoted from the TC website. I also told them I was a tech and sent them a copy of my certification. I had a cheque in a couple of days. It cost almost as much to replace my seats as it did to fix the van.

I wish i had a certificate to slap in there faces so i can get new ones. The lady i taked to didnt even look at them or any thing just asked what kinda crash it was and told her it was a icy road and slammed in to the cement going 80 km, and she asked where the point of impact was and i said that it was to the front, and she said that since it was not near where the car seats there are normaly fine and can handle it with out being damaged. And that they dont normaly replace car seats for a minor accident like that. Said that if we wanted to we could replace them our self, but she wont give us a letter for our insurance to cover them like we need. So i dont no she said they SHOULD be fine but i dont no. And she is the only local paramedic that does up them letters, and wont do it up for us. So not to sure what other channels we can do, to get what we need.

Why do you need a paramedic to write a letter for you? Wasn't law enforcement involved in this accident as well? Can't the officer write the letter? Simply the fact that you have children, your insurance knows this fact and that you are reporting an accident should automatically deem that they replace the car seats. It sounds like someone is trying to get out of doint their job personally. I would keep knocking on doors and bothering these people since they obviously are clueless when it comes to car seat safety. 80 km/hr is not a walking speed. It's fairly fast and can do a lot of damage.
