Oct. 24--VICTORVILLE -- They knew it would be a rigorous challenge training to become top-notch life savers capable of responding to the scariest of emergencies.

What they didn't know was that in the process they'd become skillful digital-video producers.

In an attempt to liven up the learning process and make lessons more memorable, Victor Valley College paramedic students are, for the first time, learning the ins and outs of emergency medicine through curriculumbased filmmaking.

" It's the common joke in the paramedic class that if we fail out of school, at least we can work in Hollywood," joked paramedic student John Pollock.

But the future life savers aren't failing. On the contrary, their instructors say the college's 12th paramedic academy is excelling on assessments and grasping complex concepts in shorter spans of time.

Awesome idea. After all, who hasn't learned something about heart blocks from

awesome, i'm in the class. kinda cool that it's getting nationwide recognition. i really like the idea of learning through videos, however, i think the production of videos may take away from our class time.

I am a paramedic student in VVC's Paramedic Academy and I helped to create that video as well as many others. I am soft spoken unless something that I feel passionately about it misrepresented.(learning through creating videos and our academy)
Learning through creating videos has been extremely helpful to my learning experience as well as our class as a hole. Actually... our instructors incorporate our video assignments with what areas we are learning and not just random subjects. This learning style has helped me to place in the top of the class throughout the paramedic academy, including first in pharmacology.
I spent hours filming as well as editing and I can tell everyone first hand that it has helped me as well as 99% of our academy to excel. The part about "learning faster" is right on the money and I am proud to attend Victor Valley College Paramedic Academy. Furthermore I am proud to be able to show my mentors as well as other EMS professionals what we've created and what we've worked so hard on.

If anyone has any questions about our program or about learning through creating videos I would be happy to answer!
