I will be starting my EMT training in November and then paramedic degree and eventually PA school. I have been on deferred sentence for the past year for a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge from April 2011 (I was drunk and damaged some property). After I complete my deferred sentence this month the charges will be dropped and my record will be clean of convictions. I will also be able to have the deferment and probation expunged. My question is will this affect the certs and degrees I want and/or my quest for employment. If I was not convicted of anything and had the records expunged am I required to report arrests or charges on employment apps? Will my chances of getting into the schools and programs I want be put in jeopardy? Do background checks reveal expunged records?

If you have expunged your records then no, they are gone. Sealed up so that only law enforcement and the courts can see them. And even law enforcement can't see them for employment background. If they ask if you've been arrested and you don't feel that lying is ever ok, just say that yes you have but you have no convictions. That being said, it may take six months to a year for the expungements to be processed so that they wont show up on your criminal history.

Depends on where you live. Here in Texas, even your expungements can keep you out of certain EMS/FF jobs. So, like was said, get an attorney to verify.
