Hello all! I am moving to Texas in June and looking at applying to Austin EMS. I saw they have an academy, does anyone have any info further on the academy? What workouts they do, what they go over, etc. Do they only hire paramedics or do they hire EMT B as well. Also, do they help pay for medic school if they hire EMT Bs? Thank you!

ATC hires EMTs, but does not pay for medic school. With that being said, ACC does have plenty of familiarity with ATC’s schedule and people going to medic school around it.

Other departments in the area (various fire departments, San Marcos Hays, City of Schertz, etc. and privates (Acadian, AMR, Allegiance) are viable options as well. ATC does almost all 911 in Travis County, but even those privates have sizable 911 districts of their own nearby.

Pay is probably high-30s to start with reasonable schedules including realistic OT. Scope of practice is pretty broad, although as an EMT, you’ll be in a supporting role. Central Texas is a nice place to love.

If Texas EMS were a high school, ATCEMS is the preppy white kid who goes to private school and is extremely vocal about how great they are. Houston area services are the edgy rich kids trying new things. Brazos Valley services are the farm kids. RGV and South Texas services are actual farmers. DFW and North Texas services are the poor white kids. West Texas is the homeschooled crowd, and El Paso is a Mexican high school from the sister city.
