I have been to AU a few times. who cares about the cost, have you seen the place? Have you seen the female medics? When I retire, I will pay them to work there.

Don't take me wrong, I am sure NZ has to be the same. I was just worried about all the spray paint on the sheep there. Here in the states, our gangs tag building walls and overpasses.

This is extremely interesting. I keep hearing "intensive care paramedic" thrown around. What kind of procedures can the top level medic of NZ/AU perform? or is it not much different from an American medic?

I find international healthcare and EMS extremely interesting. Actually I find anything not American interesting lol.

The difference is not really in what they can do, but rather they have a substantial base of knowledge and experience to draw from and can work flexibly. It takes a minimum of six years (four at university) to become an ICP.

Paramedic
OPA/NPA/LMA
Manual defibrillation
Cardioversion
12 lead ECG interpretation
IV fluid administration
Aspirin
GTN
Salbutamol
Glucagon
Glucose 10%
Entonox
Methoxyflurane
Paracetamol
Ondansetron
Adrenaline
Morphine
Naloxone
Ceftriaxone (some)

Intensive Care Paramedic
All of the above +
Endotracheal intubation
Cricothyrotomy
Intraosseous
Pacing
Atropine
Frusemide
Midazolam
Ketamine

Some have:
Fentanyl
Suxamethonium
Vecuronium
Heparin
Streptase

I work with an aussie ICP where I am at now in the middle east. Our scope of practice is the same but his knowledge base is pretty extensive. I usually call him instead of medical control, of course the guy also has 20 years on the job so I guess that helps also

Unfortunately, no matter what he says, i know you still can only give Epi!

Tell Ferg i said Oi!

Pretty much the same here as what Brown mentioned with a few differences mostly on account of logistical and cost related issues.

We have Fent and Midaz at the Paramedic level. But no 12 lead on account of cost/benefit I suppose. Maxolon and prochlorperazine instead of ondansetron. Stuff like that.

The underlying idea is the same. Everyone is educated. So there isn't really a big jump in theory from Paramedic to ICP, like there is with basic to paramedic. The idea is that we're all well educated healthcare professionals and we call Intensive care for specific management techniques from specialists in a particular part of the job, not just for heart rates >100 or pts with pain or whatever.

Tell Ferg i said Oi!

"Oz... oi Oz, this bloke is bit bloody crook mate, Brown reckons he has some sort of ruptured thingamadongle in his gizzard, lets get him on the stretcher and down to the car before he starts hurling from his gob"

Ah, classic down under ambo talk :D

Schulz...he doesn't happen to be from Qld by any chance???

Sure does.

Not only did he make me eat Vegemite but I also had to do that "aussie aussie aussie, oi oi oi" thing. I keep telling him to get on this stupid forum.

Bloody Australian happens to be right this time :D

Brown gets called lots of strange things because Brown's crazy accent means the Americans cant understand his name because to them when Brown says "en" it sounds like "in"

Hey Fergs! I think it must be time for you to come home eh? I worked at Gemmies for 4 days and all pt's ever wanted to know was "When's fergs coming back" or "where's dave?". Apparently a young, blonde, chick isn't good enough for them! :-(

Holy thread resurrection Batman! I posted this months ago!
