I am just finishing up with an AEMT course in Atlanta, GA and moving to VA Beach. I am very interested in continuing on to become a medic. I have been researching the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squads. Am I correctly reading that if I volunteer, that I will get free paramedic training? If anyone could provide more information on Paramedic programs in the area, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I will be Nationally Certified AEMT. Does Virginia also require a regional certification?

Well HELLO!! I was beginning to think I was one of the few Virginians around here.

I actually just finished up the paperwork and am now a registered volunteer with the VB volunteer rescue squads, despite not having done my emt-b class yet. I'll only be able to go on ride-alongs as an observer for a while.

And yes you are reading that correctly, VBEMS will pay for your ems training, but in exchange you sign a contract to volunteer with them for two years. If you can't give them the two years and break the contract you will have to pay them the cost of the course. You're basically exchanging your time for their money.

There's an accredited paramedic program offered at Tidewater Community College.

Information on Virginia reciprocity here.
