Back in 1991 i pleaded no contest to a charge of possession of marijuana ( a roach). When I sent me original criminal background check in I forgotten about in and did not include that detail. the state had a field day with it and delayed my certification for several months while they investigated. I've had my cert. for 3 years now with no other problems. Should i keep including it in my applications to other services or leave it out. While no one has ever told me to my face that this is an issue, it seems some services never return calls about why i dont get hired. I have always included it in my application. I am limiting myself by including it or will other ems services do as thorough a search as the state did.

I would include it. If you do, and the service doesn't pursue your application, that's unfortunate. However, if you don't include it, and they find out about it, there's no way they will want you on their team. IMHO.

If the State found out about it then your prospective employers who do background checks will to. It was 18 years ago and a very minor charge. If no other criminal offenses show up then I would hate to believe an employer would not hire you because of something like that, that occurred 18 years ago.

Unfortunately, I would say you almost have to put it down. Maybe a small narrative attached to your application explaining your position in life at the time and how your life has evolved since then may help mitigate the damage of having to report it on an application. How old were u at the time will play to.

If the state granted you a certification with that past charge included then your biggest problem lies when you don't include it on your applications. Lying on an application shows the potental employer something about your character and integrity.

Many applications ask you to provide explanation if you check the yes box. Give brief accurate info.
