(April 21) - A day after a Texas TV station aired the story of a 700-pound woman who pleaded for help finding health care, a local rehabilitation clinic accepted her case Tuesday, CBS 11 TV reported.

Karen Ferguson, who suffers from diabetes and other health problems, left her home with the help of a local ambulance crew. It was the first time she had been outside her trailer in Fort Worth in a year.

"She has the abilities to get out and get better. It's all in the matter of her will power, and I believe she's got it," one of the paramedics said.

In her interview with CBS 11 a day earlier, Ferguson said she needs help with tasks such as moving to her portable toilet, which is just steps from a large chair that was built to hold her weight.

Ferguson said she is suffering from bed sores and other problems related to being immobile. She had been turned down by nursing homes because of problems with Medicare, she said.

She expressed her fears of remaining bed-ridden for the rest of her life as her bed sores fester and her body deteriorates.

"That's the worst thing I could ever imagine," Ferguson said.

I wish her the best of luck, it's great a nursing home finally accepted her!

My first EMS gig was for Hunter Ambulance-Ambulette a private service in Inwood NY in '02. One of our accounts was Brookhaven Rehab in Far Rockaway. They specialize in bariatric pts, are aggressive in resoring function and activities of daily living, and dedicated the third floor to bariatrics. The facility has been featured on Discovery Channel. It's unfortunate that there aren't many more of these facilities available in less populated areas. As a side note, if you don't have a bariatric cot, you can cut up sheets to form straps to keep the fat from rolling off to the sides(seriously). We used to txp with the old two man cots, and this trick came in handy.

yesterday Actually I transported a 649lb bariatric pt to the NEAREST Bariatric Nursing Facility. Pt was in East Tennessee....

The Facility was in just 20 mintues south of Toleto Ohio. 8 hours one way.

With this growing healthcare issue across the country there should be more of this facilities.

But then again I cant complain, it was 16 hours of overtime with mileage bonus. 510 miles at .30/mile = new pair of duty boots!!!

Good for her for seeking help and getting it! I bet a lot of her health problems will resolve as she loses weight.
