Well, I am 23 years old, recently I have been laid off from my sales job and now I have decided that I want to get a real career. I've always had a passion for helping people and so I have decided to become a paramedic, a career that although will probably pay less, will be the more rewarding in life. I am from Sacramento and will be attending American River college Paramedic program. But to get to the program I will need become first EMT basic and finish up my AA degree. Once I got that then I'll need to volunteer for about a year to get the required experience. Once I got that then go through the ARC Paramedic program and then graduate and get a job. Is this the right path, what would you guys recommend. Any input would be appreciated.

heres the link to the program info...

One thing, California is not really a volunteer state. You will need to get a job, most liking doing interfacility transports, for your experience. And, don't let anyone here tell you skip the experience, cause, well, I've yet to come across a medic program in Cali that doesn't ask for at least 6 months. BTW, what AA are you currently working on? Most college based medic programs will net you an AS, if you have the general education credits, which, really, you should.

If you can find a program that lets you go straight to Paramedic w/o wasting 6-12 months getting "experience" you will be better off. At the basic level you will have no medical education only slightly more than boy or girl scout first aid training. More and more programs are now having basic in first semester of their Paramedic degree program. This way you never quit your education.

Find a program you get direct entry into.
