Unfortunately my family got to learn all about this last year. My (well fiancee) 4 year old nephew was diagnosed with ALL (Leukemia). All went well until he went in for his chemo, and underlying condition he had RSV. He developed resp failure and in the end, ended up on this machine at U of M.
Unfortunately, we were not able to save him with other conditions like sepsis, pneumos, pe hitting one after another. He was the first child to ever be put on the adult ECMO and it was all trial stuff. He was on about 5 times the amount of sedation that an adult would need because...well...I really don't know. But they had hard time keeping him sedated for a bit.
Dr Bartlett stopped in multiple times and that man, words cannot explain how amazing he really is.
University of Michigan posted a video about the 2000th person that was placed on ECMO.
