Hello! I am 19 and just got my EMT cert at the beginning of June. I have a clean driving record, ambulance certificate and a good cover letter and resume. But! Almost ALL ambulance companies in my area don't hire under 21. There is only 2 places I can apply to and recently got rejected by one. The other one (AMR) has an online app that won't let me even start an app until a position opens up where I want to work (central valley). At the same time, there is 14 jobs open, all within 2 or 3 hours driving distance from me. I want nothing more but to be an EMT right now! Should I relocate? I have family that lives where most of the positions are open and they have already agreed to support me if I choose to relocate.

Also, what can I do to improve my app., resume, etc. for the future? (I am applying again in a few months)

Thanks in advance!

Moving is really up to you. Consider how much you will be paid, and will you get full time/part time/per diem? How much will you have to pay to live around there? One thing I would be hesitant on doing is moving without being sure if I have the job or not.

Go back to school and become trained in another allied health field. or go pre-med.

Forgot to add that I am a prenursing student with one more semester before nursing school! I am interested in ER nursing and flight nurse. I wanted to work as an EMT for the emergency experience but, as you can see, my options are limited.

If you live in the greater Sacramento area, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department (Metro Fire) is hiring for Single Role Emergency Medical Technician-Basic's.

Thanks! Sacramento is actually one place I am seriously considering because I have a cousin there that will let me move in for free if hired anywhere :)

The posting is for a 3 year limited term EMT-Basic position, with achieving paramedic accreditation by the end of the three years a requirement. Just an FYI!

Wow! Expect a PM from me with any questions!

Okay, and I'll try to answer them the best I can... I don't know a whole lot about the position itself as I just applied, however I do know a little bit about the department. I did my EMT training with them 10 years ago (yikes!)...

Put the majority of your effort into being an above average new nurse grad. By getting your RN you are greatly improving your ability to make a decent living. Working as an EMT while your in school is fine but dont let it distract you from being a good student.

If your looking at Sac Fire be advised they used to have one of the toughest PAT's in the fire service. This may have been changed to the watered down CPAT but you might want to check to be sure. Either way you will need to be in above average shape.

The positions are non-firefighting and are for single role EMT's and single role Paramedics to staff 12 hour flex ambulances to augment the 24 hour FF/EMT and FF/PM ambulances.

Under the supplemental information section of the job posting there ia a mention of physical requirements. Not saying its the same as it is for fire recruits but you can bet it will be a factor when it comes to final selections. They are investing time and money into these candidates and are not going to choose fat sloppy out of shape recruits. Not to be rude but its Sac Fire not AMR.

This will no doubt be a highly competetive process and knowing that might lead one to ask themselves what can I do to be the best all around candidate. My point was it might be a benefit if your in above average shape. Even just having the healthy look that comes with regular exercise could be a factor. Sac Fire is a well repected agency and you will see at the end of the process the types of candidates they choose will not be your averge EMT. Once again anything you can do to help get a step up on the competition will benefit you in the long run.

Agree that physical conditioning will definitely play a part. But when you say Sac Fire, makes me think of Sacramento City FD, who go by Sac Fire, while the dept currently hiring is Sac Metro. Both well respected agencies, but I'm just curious.

Good point and we should show respect by keeping them seperate. My bad for useing the "Sac Fire".

And I concure with the level of respect for these agencies. A foot in the door with either one is going to be well worth the effort its going to take to get "the call".

Do you remember which one had the killer PAT,I heard it made the biddle look like a day at fat camp. I think Stockton has a pretty brutal PAT also, its been a few years since I heard of anyone testing out with agencies up that way.
