Hey guys, you had wanted to know what the new program at La Trobe was like, and while I haven't gone more than a month in to it I feel I can offer a little insight.
The whole curriculum is still being written. I'm in the 2nd class to ever do it, the first class probably has it a bit rougher as...
I just thought I'd drop in and let you guys know, I was accepted in to the bachelor of health science/master of paramedic practice at La Trobe. I'll be leaving shortly! :) :) :)
Yes, I know. I was wondering why other ambulance services don't have the same for international students. In Queensland, for example, you have to be a permanent resident/citizen to even set off on a paramedic degree.
Well, having read everyone's advice I've gone ahead and tossed a few applications off to universities.
I do have a question, though. What's different about Victoria? All the other universities had a pretty strict permanent residence/citizen requirement for the paramedic course, whereas in...
Were you in the United States when you took the course? Or did you take it in France somehow? If you came to the US and took an EMT-B course, while the program director suggested it would lead to employment despite your immigration status, you can at least try to get your money back...
They said I would be considered if I applied for a full time student paramedic spot. It's not a volly thing.
I must ask, though, what's wrong with St John?
Therein lies the problem - there is no formal university based paramedic education in the United States. It takes roughly three semesters to go from layman to paramedic, and this is done through tech schools.
If cert iv ambulance officers are less than an emt-b, there may be more hope than...
Hey guys, I know there's quite a few of these threads floating around and they were all informative in their own way. However, my questions are coming from a different starting point which makes me want to seek.. clarification.
I am (start drumroll) an EMT-basic. That's right, nothing more...
My first call was a nosebleed. I remember the page quite well. It was an "alpha response" (dispatch code around here for sorry about the bogus call), but when we got there the blood was all over the place and shotgun shooting out of her nose. No joke, shot from her nose on one end of the room...
If you don't think up and coming things are good, that's on you. I prefer to stay on the cutting edge and save as many lives as possible. New technology and techniques are a *good thing*.
Anyone couch sitting for two years is getting razzed for it and has his own problems. Regardless, he still has more experience than the new guy with only the 120 hour course. The new guy needs to listen, not act like he's entitled to the kingdom's keys.
If someone says "probie do x", do it. Don't ask to see SOG's or department policies showing where you're their slave. There's no quicker way to upset the old guard than to show disrespect like that. If someone with seniority tells you to do something, you do it. Asking them to show you how...
It doesn't send the cell in to anaerobic respiration, it halts most metabolism all together. It's akin to putting you under an anesthetic. Your brain functions decline, but you're still there.
Yeah, that's what I was talking about.
I'm not entirely sure what the "stasis treatment" (for...
Volunteer agencies that can't get volunteers anymore are going to die, and a paid system will be put in place as a result. I'm fairly sure every state's laws say you have to have EMS agencies responding to emergency calls, and within a reasonable distance. That's not the EMS agency's...
There was a guy on the TED website talking about an injectable drug that can essentially put a dying person in stasis, by locking the ability of cells to get oxygen out and dropping metabolism to a near standstill. Strange concept, but it works - and he's wanting to see it used in EMS...
My biggest problem with where I'm at is that there's no room for advancement. Sure, I'm a full time ff/emt, but if I stay here that's *all* I'll ever be. No room for paramedic. It's a combination career/volunteer department, and only volunteers can become officers. So there's no room up the...
