    Tasers and Gurneys

Thanks everyone. This is great info. Taser use here is relatively infrequent and therefore we recieve almost no training on it (mostly stay out of the way and let the cops handle it). How does alcohol/drug intoxication change change the effects os a taser? Why remove the barbs in the field...

    Tasers and Gurneys

I did not provide all the details but the officer's actions in this specific case would have been warranted as the pt was posing a danger to our crew and had one hand cuffed and the other not. Thankfully the officer was able to subdue the pt in the end without the taser but there was a reason we...

    Tasers and Gurneys

Yesterday I had a not so lovely situations where a police offer almost had to taser an pt in the back of the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The pt was handcuffed to the gurney which is metal. How much electricity do tasers use and would the handcuffs/gurney have conducted it? I assume it...

    100% Directionless Thread

I couldn't find the thread about crazy calls so I'll post this here. I got a call at 7am this morning for an assault and when I got there had to declare death for the victim and...It was a dog. Not really something we were trained for.

What was your first 911 call?

So how do your dispatches determine what's an emergency and what's not? Can you see a difference in the calls dispatched with people who have EMS training and those who don't (or do you have limited interaction with the dispatchers? What happens if someone calls 911 for something that is not an...

    A 'lil Dizzy

I call for ALS. SVT and the high bgl plus suspicion of drug interaction. (Can a dr in the US see all other drugs other drs have prescribed to the pt and all other medical history?) I think the dermatologist messed up and he shouldn't be on oral steroids. If an ALS unit is closer to me than the...

    Dumbest Questions People Ask You

Yesterday I had a pt who asked me repeatedly if he was conscious. Am I conscious? Yes Are you sure? I am very sure. Am I going to loose consciousness? Unfortunately, no. Well, how will I know if I loose consciousness? Don't worry, If you suddenly loose consciousness I'll let you know...

    Crewmember in Distress

I think the translation of the word we use is report but yeah, when we let them know what is coming so they can be ready.

    Crewmember in Distress

So to start with we have a totally different emergency system. There is not 1 number that you call for any emergency like 911. You call 100 for police, 101 for ambulance, 102 or fire and 103 for electrical (like downed wires and such). All the dispatchers can transfer you to each other if you...

    Crewmember in Distress

Its a personal radio? You take it out of the ambulance with you? The only time we use such a thing is for large events. If we are not in the ambulance we usually talk to dispatch on our cellphones.

    Crewmember in Distress

We are often 2 people and usually way outnumbered by the family members. Esp in certain sectors that tend more towards violence than others. Two crew members surrounded by 10 family members who are all in an emotional state is generally not the best odds.

    Crewmember in Distress

I have used the same code - MDA 1000 - (it's shorter to say in Hebrew than in English) to let my driver know a pt was trying to assult me. He was able to understand and pullover to help me right away. I didn't want to straight say I needed help since I didn't know if the pt had a propensity for...

    Crewmember in Distress

Yes. This has happened here before. A crew arrived on sceen and the pt was way past dead. They didnt start CPR as he was in rigor. The family refused to let the team leave or call dispatch. Finally the crew told the family that in order to help the guy that they needed someone to bring a...

What is your most ridiculous call?

I had a guy who "might have broken his pinky". I also had a call the other night came is as 92 year old female in respiratory distress. Turns out she just didnt want to go to bed (it was 1130pm) and called an ambulance so her caretaker would have to let her stay up later.

    Crewmember in Distress

Do you have a code for crewmember in distress? Something you can give on the phone or radio or say to let others know you are in distress and need help?
