I was only over by 3 beats. The guys who pass the first time around are usually cardio freaks. Sounds more like you had a legitimate panic attack.
Do you get to retest?
The retest for fire is a 3 minute warmup, 5 minute rest, 8 minutes with a 50lb vest.
I had to retake the firefighter stairmaster test because I was so nervous my heartrate exceeded the limit. (Dont worry EMS test has no heartrate limit)
Just don't make the mistake I did, and get it tattooed on your arm. Granted its still a cool tat and it doesn't hurt to remember where you come from.
On the flip side, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.
How the heck am I supposed to relearn everything when I finish the fire academy in a couple weeks?
Hopefully I set foot back on the ambulance and it all comes back to me...
Nervous. Was doing so well self educating and building my knowledge up until 4 months ago.
Long Island is all volly departments that do a run or two a day.
NYC does allow ride alongs with FDNY I'm not 100% who you would need to contact though. Anyone I know has gone through a friend in which case you just get the paperwork and show up to work with them. I would offer but I don't...
Who gave you that information?
FDNY and the city of NY specifically said they will never conform to hiring quotas. Hiring is done solely by your place on the list.
And EMS has no shortage of women on the job. I would venture to say its as close as 60/40 in some stations.
I believe all these kids did was fill a pressure cooker with black powder and jam a detonator of some form in it. All things I can acquire for $150 within 10 minutes of my home. Scary.
Scariest part about all this too me is just how easy it is to make such a lethal device with things you can buy at the local store.
Not to say it isn't awful what happened but the devastation of such a device on the corner times square or in a packed train car pulling into penn station would be...
From a NYC standpoint, it is very common for an EMS provider to be mistaken for a police officer.
When something legitimate occurs NYPD turns out extremely fast in extreme numbers. They probably won't even see your ambulance or notice that your patches are different in the sea of cops. They...
Just because the state legalizes something doesn't mean your employer has to allow it.
For example, smoking cigarettes is completely legal but if a Boston firefighter is caught smoking they can lose their job.
NYC EMS stopped wearing badges I believe around the time they became FDNY EMS due to the fact that it made the EMS providers look too similar to police officers which is potentially endangering to the providers. The locals aren't often too fond of the po-po.
FDNY deploys a medical director(s) to major incidents to oversee operations and approve orders without the need to go through on-line medical control.
As already stated im sure people who were there happened to be doctors as well... including runners.
