How did you prepare for your practical?

for my basic I failed my first practical. I realized that I didn't know the steps from the sheets as I should have in addition to being sick and nervous. When I retook it I made flashcards and was much less nervous and new everything by heart. I'm already studying for my medic and I'm not...

I've never seen a problem with Boston EMS. Almost everyone there has worked for a private prior to working there.

    Getting along with other services

Depends on the company. We have good relations with 3 services where we call each other for assistance. There are a like 2 others my company with have nothing to do with for good reason. On the EMT level most of us get along because we all deal with the same BS and do the same thing.

ALL RIGHT, once and for all: Who owns the scene?

I did a drill at a local air force base with a live runway. The runway we were on was closed, but planes were taken off and landing on the other ones. The base was responsible for escorting people to scene and staging area. Fire was in charge of scene and transport of PT's to staging area...

Get "Ambulance Workers" to take you seriously

I'm fine with ambulance worker. The article doesn't downplay what we do. I don't like being called an ambulance driver, but I don't lose sleep over this stuff.

Making small talk with patients during long transfers

I had a third rider the other day on day four and we had a transfer that should have been 45 minutes but was 2.5 hours due to snow. We figured it would take that long anyway. I gave him some tips for conversation starters because this was a sit and babysit the PT for the ride. No major PMH or...

Boston Globe: Should the FD respond to medicals?

Boston Ems having police ride along makes sense given some areas. Boston Ems gets self defense lessons in the academy and after graduation you get a bullet proof vest and handcuffs.

Boston Globe: Should the FD respond to medicals?

Keep in mind, Boston Fire does not do PT transports. As for the fly cars, cross the river into cambridge and cambridge fire has 2 "fly cars" staffed by medics. These are basically vans staffed by 2 medics with forcible entry equipment. Cambridge as 2 rescue trucks but they mostly rely on...

Boston Globe: Should the FD respond to medicals?

I've seen Boston Ems trucks beat Boston fire to calls. Bfd does not transport but typically fire be on scene first to initiate care.

Tiered response or all out response?

It depends what city I get dispatched to. If I'm dispatched to a city we have the 911 contract for then we get everything. If I get dispatched to a city where we back the fire departments Ems then we are either there with everyone or by ourself or just meeting police. Depends on the call and city.

EMS Noobie looking to dive into EMT B training in Boston Area... where do I start?

if your basic ticket is fairly new from another state you don't need to tale the practical. A few people in my medic class just got reciprocity from new tickets both from Maine and only had to take the written. The state is backed up right now for sure with renewals which has been a headache...

paperwork for reciprocity takes forever. It takes 3 to 4 weeks to get your info straight before your practical. If you pass the practical you find out in about 8 to 9 business days by checking in with a third party site. Then you may take the written at a date you can choose. If you fail the...

EMS Noobie looking to dive into EMT B training in Boston Area... where do I start?

Boston univ offers a basic course. Northeastern offers courses from that run from 5 to 8 weeks. Those are on the pricey side. I took mine through a community college. Much much cheaper. Depending on how long you will be in your current state just get your to there and apply for reciprocity...
