Why do medics with the FD make more?

I'm sure there are great systems outside of CA. I can only speak of my experiences which soley reside in CA. I've been licensed in 5 different counties in CA and my fire counterparts attitudes didn't differ by much. I'm hoping I've only got another year and a half before I leave this state.

Why do medics with the FD make more?

It'd be nice if that extra responsibility and pay translated into better patient care, however, at least in CA it does not. I'd like to see some of the fire medics near me actually 'pretend' to care about EMS. These are generalizations which of course does not mean every FD or every FF / PM...

Ohhh Mulholland Dr.... Brings back memories. Especially my low side through some gravel into a concrete barrier. 3 surgeries, some metal hardware, and a gnarly scar later my arm is as good as new. Have fun, keep the rubber side down.

    Single Role FD Medics

Have to agree with what was said about SBco. OP: I believe Mono County EMS is seperate from the fire dept http://www.monocounty.ca.gov/ems/page/about-mono-county-ems I don't know much about them though.

How accepting are the EMS/FD community?

I work at a fire station that houses a private ambulance and one individual on the ambulance is openly gay. He is very well respected and liked by all the ambulance employees as well as the fire dept. However, you better have thick skin as there are still those that make jokes with him around in...

Will I ever work in EMS again?

Minimum 10 years before applying in CA. However, I'd look for another job/career.

    Does your Company/Department provide CISD?

Use trained professionals (I.E. Those with thousands of hours clinical experience with cognitive behavioral therapy). I wouldn't recommend CISD/M over more traditional methods.

Advice needed......when to throw in the towel

I always tell people to look at where you want to be in 20/30 years. Unfortunately, EMS in CA pays extremely poor unless you work for a FD. So you unless you move or work for fire its highly unlikely you'll be able to retire from field EMS work even as a medic. Is it possible? Sure, but very...

    LA County Fire.....

I agree. Even in CA there are great FDs with amazing employees. However, this is not the norm and I've worked in 5 different counties with close to over 30 different fire depts. The apathy towards EMS is palpable. Good to know there are some FDs out there that do actually care though.

    LA County Fire.....

My advice, move far far away from LA county (CA as a whole really). In all seriousness I witnessed much of the same in LA county for several years. Most fire depts are delusional in the fact that they perform poor care. They'll never admit it and I highly doubt it'll ever change. Obviously...

Wow..... Just wow..... You clearly need to look at the "facts" here and not the surrounding emotions / media biasis. But I'm sure you'll stick with your 'opinion' so I won't even bother. And there is a reason your audience disagrees with you and its not because of their opinions.
