    Armed EMT's

I was drawn on by someone who thought it was a good idea to train their dog to respond to the sound of a rifle action haha. So I knock on the door, it opens, I hear the sound of a round being chambered and all I see is a rifle barrel swinging up towards me. So I start backing up and moving to...

    Armed EMT's

Short answer: No Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooo Longer answer: The violent crime rate in the US has been dropping since like 1994, we don't even have the education to do our primary job, and despite being attacked multiple times while at work and having a gun pulled on me, I can't come up...

    19 day EMT course?

If you're already going to be taking a nursing course, I feel like you're going to cover most of the "gaps" that an accelerated course will have in your normal studies. If you feel like you can handle it I would go for it. Others may disagree though. As far as a semester long class in the...

Pay Discrepancies on EMS1, Bureau of Labor Statistics?

There was a union shop near me in Philly that started the EMT-Bs at like $20/hr. More common was 15-18 an hour starting. There's also certainly no non-compete stuff so people are free to work as many jobs as they want. Only downside is the snow and you have to go to New Jersey to use the beach.

    19 day EMT course?

I took my EMT course in college, so it lasted about a semester (4ish months?). I flatter myself that I'm a pretty good EMT, but I attribute that to having great medic parters who were open to teaching, studying stuff on my own, and working in a busy system. I attribute absolutely none of it to...

National EMS Scope of Practice Model Revision

Yeah I think we're all basically saying similar things. I wasn't trying to suggest that a freshly minted midlevel provider should be expected to bounce from school directly into an emergency or critical care environment with minimal supervision the way we expect a paramedic to. All medicine is...

National EMS Scope of Practice Model Revision

While I agree with most of what you said, I've never been a huge fan of the "keep adding more skills" plan for improving EMS. I would argue that most American paramedics don't even have the pharm/physio/pathophys education for the skills that they currently perform (those medic mills at the top...

    Paramedic positions in NYC

I don't know exactly, sorry. If I had to guess it would probably be somewhere between $20-24 an hour? Like I said earlier, I'm in med school here, all my EMS connections are in Philadelphia. I think someone at my school works part time for one of the hospital EMS systems, I can ask him what he...

    Unapproving Parents?

My parents were disappointed with fire/EMS as a career choice. I did it anyway, with no regrets. While I'm not full time EMS anymore, it's not because of money or because I disliked it, just because I wanted to get more education. It's a fun job, and despite most of my high school friends being...

    Paramedic positions in NYC

Haha no worries. I'm just procrastinating for a pharm test so I'm happy to blab about anything that isn't some strange flavor of antibiotic.

    Paramedic positions in NYC

Also, as much as I love NY, I'm pretty sure you qualify for the city's affordable housing lottery on the EMT base salary. @NysEms2117 That's pretty expensive, though its also one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city I think (West Village). My buddies and I pay a bit under $3000 for...

    Paramedic positions in NYC

Deep down in their heart, everyone wants to move to New York ;) At least that's my explanation for why the rent is so damn high.

    Paramedic positions in NYC

So most of my EMS experience is in the Philadelphia region, but I live in NYC now for medical school so I have a vague idea what's going on. FDNY EMS has a long waiting list, partially because it's a big EMS agency in a sexy city with pretty good benefits (though the salary isn't exactly great...

How to choose an EMT course in Philadelphia?

I'm from Philly (well, Montgomery County) and I've never heard anything bad about Jeff's EMT program. But like others have said, where you went to EMT school barely matters. It's such a trimmed down course that most of your learning will occur hands on after you get your cert. I would say...

    Physical Requirements?

I agree with this. Especially if your parents are going to be able to pay for your education, a BSN allows you to do EMS, but also allows you to work in almost any other flavor of healthcare (ED, ICU, fly in a helicopter, pediatrics, general medicine, surgery, home care, whatever you want). You...

    Pathophysiology book

http://www.globalrph.com/labs.htm Is a table of common lab values, though you really only need to know a handful of those to understand basic physiology. http://www.cpmc.org/learning/labtests.html Is a decent explanation of those values.

    Pathophysiology book

I used Costanzo's physiology in medical school and found it pretty easy to read, as med school textbooks go. My only caution is, like most textbooks, some of the example medications they use can be pretty outdated--so they may use digoxin to explain a concept about cardiac output, even though...

Any interesting anecdotes about interference with patient care from a CNA, lifegurad, etc.?

I remember blowing the minds of upper year medical students when I demonstrated how to palp a BP at a clinic event. It's not really something docs would learn until intern year and beyond, but at the time it was pretty funny.

Ah gotcha. I'm as East Coast as it gets so I don't know too much about California EMS outside LA County.

In my personal experience, if you don't want to be a firefighter, fire academy and working on suppression units will be a miserable experience. Not to mention how extremely difficult it is to get hired in Southern CA as a firefighter. If you do really want to be a firefighter, obviously that...
