EMS Provider Mental Health And Wellness

I just took the ResponderStrong train the trainer. It's a good basic curriculum for all first responders. The class that can be taught is 3.5 hours and is broken down broadly towards suicide awareness, Stress Management, and Resiliency Skills. The Train the Trainer is 8 hours. I would definitely...

Here comes the Future of AI health care

I have to say that I have been playing with the recent round of generative AI tools and I am impressed. I don't think they will ever replace medical providers, but they can definitely augment services. The deep thinking version of Google gemini is impressive. I gave it a simple 2 sentence...

What was your first 911 call?

LMAO. Probably next to my car keys that I keep losing as I get older.

What was your first 911 call?

Hmmm, first 911 call... that would have been in 1994 and I'm not 100% sure. Sicne I was riding on a college squad, it was probably a drunk. I do remember the first time I used an SAED - the good old Heartstart 3000. It was 2 weeks after I took the Defib class and became an EMT-D (back when...

    “An assessment”

When do you actually stop assessing the patient during a call? Are you only making a single assessment of the patient when you first meet them then ignore them during transport? Or, are you watching the patient for any changes in condition... aka reassessing them regularly? A better way to...

    Gifts

Since you have 4 officers, maybe look at items that you think they would each find useful or something they have been on the fence about getting for themselves rather than the same for all of them. That would show that you listen to them throughout the year. On a side note, I remember one...

When would you request a supervisor to a scene?

In an ideal world, an EMS supervisor should go to any high priority call to assist the crew. For example, on a cardiac arrest, head to the scene to assist the crew by handling the family and getting demographics and history, letting the crew handle the patient. Basically, calm the scene down and...

10 signs of a bad ems supervisor

This is one of the reasons why NYS BEMS has been rolling out an EMS Leadership class. I just attended the one at the Vital Signs Conference and recommend it to anybody in a leadership role in EMS. I am also finishing up the train the train components online. It is 16 hours for the core...

    When to discourage transport

I just looked at the Virginia state EMS page and it is abysmal. I now understand your frustration. Look at many other states BEMS pages...many have direct links to statewide BLS protocols and policies. In NYS, we are even given access to a mobile app for protocols that is updated regularly...

    When to discourage transport

How do you not have protocols for refusals? Are you saying no agency protocols or no state protocols for refusals? Here in NYS, we have a 2 page statewide protocol that gives guidelines on when to consider medical control, when a CFR can cancel a transporting unit and what an EMT or higher...

Officer retires after incident with EMT

I see both points...Although I agree with Rubicon Bob on the item of maintaining full salary through March 2025. That sounds like allowing the bad apple cop to accrue a higher pension, probably 1% more, but that adds up over the years. Not to mention that is almost half a year, so 55K in salary...

Officer retires after incident with EMT

This is exactly how I feel! We work closely with the police and I have quite a few friends who are good cops, but the few bad apples hurt their entire profession, especially when they do not get dealt with in an equitable way.

Officer retires after incident with EMT

https://www.whec.com/local/news10nbc-investigates-rochester-police-detective-to-retire-with-pension-after-controversial-emt-arrest-at-strong-memorial-hospital/ Basically, the PD car was parked in the ambulance zone, the EMT dinged his door while pulling in with a patient. When the officer...

    Laminated EMS pt card

Those are point to picture laminated and folded cards. I'm still looking for something a bit simpler, but they seem to be the best I have found so far.

    Laminated EMS pt card

I have been looking at the products put out by Kwikpoint to put on our units. They aren't a single 8x11, but it may fit the bill. Here's a link: https://www.kwikpoint.com/medical-translators/

Another reason why Vol EMS is dying in Connecticut

This is exactly what has happened in a couple of small towns in my rural region. Agency closes - county service fills in - county has trouble with staffing and response times suffer - people start complaining and asking the FD to start up ambulance service. Rural coverage is a challenge and the...
