    Expired Medication

Not sure about the law, but in NJ if a spot inspection is done by NJ OEMS at a hospital (pretty common) your truck can fail for having expired meds.

    Notebook placment / installation

We have Ram Mounts for our toughbooks in our rigs. Personally I'm not a fan... You can never manuver it to a comfortable angle for typing, it gets in the way when trying to switch channels on the radio (comms, not FM), and I always seem to bash my elbow on it when getting in the truck. Also...

    Police response to EMS calls

It varies from town to town here. Where I used to work FT BLS, an officer was sent on any ALS call. BLS calls were just us. Where i'm working now, we get an officer on everything. In another more urban city in our coverage area, we only get PD on domestic-related calls, or psych's.

can you volunteer without the NREMT?

Not sure how CT works, but I went through the EMT-B course when I was 16, and was able to get an NJ EMT-B cert. NREMT has always been 18. When I took the written test, everyone else took the NREMT exam, and I took the NJ EMT-B test.

    Stethoscope personalization

I had mine engraved at a place in the local mall. I forgot exactly how much it was, but it was pretty cheap.

How did you start your EMS career?

I started off as a Cadet on a volunteer squad when I was 16. Both of my parents are Paramedics, and told me to give it a try to see if I'd like it. I went through EMT-B school a month after joining. When I turned 18 I started working for a for a paid service doing some municipal 911 contracts...

    When to Upgrade to ALS!

With the particular unit I'm on, we'll respond solo to ALS or BLS calls. If there's a complaint on a BLS call that can be resolved with ALS treatment, I'll upgrade. Example, a BLS dispatch for a sick person. I'll gladly upgrade to ALS in order to administer some Zofran if the Pt is feeling...

    Sweatshirt/sweater.

I'll usually have a job shirt on in the winter. Last year I picked up a 5.11 fleece jacket that's not bulky at all, and keeps pretty warm with long sleeves and under armour cold gear underneath. I like the look of the sweaters, but I just get way too hot sitting in the office, or working in...

    Acceptable ID's.

I think I just used my DL, and a department photo ID. I believe they require two forms of photo ID.

    Getting the hard IV's.

Placing a 4x4 under the catheter before disconnecting the sharp and attaching the extension helps with that, if you can't occlude the vein.

What does your agency ride in...

My Primary job uses Chevy Suburbans, with a few Ford Expeditions as our back-up vehicles. SCT uses Type III's, and BLS transport uses Type II's. Volunteer Squad uses two Horton Type III's, awaiting delivery on a third. (pictured below) Per-diem BLS job uses Ford F-450 type I's.

    Capnography/Capnometry/ETCO2??

We use both Colormetric, for initial confirmation, as well as waveform capnography on the LP12.

    Monitors

The only times we transmit EKG's is for STEMI Pts, if we have time... Most of our transports are only 10 minutes tops

    Monitors

We use LP12's, and LP10's as our backup monitor... My father was on a business trip out to Physio in Seattle to meet with the R&D teams there about the upcoming LP15... Hijacking the thread here for a moment: What other features would you like to see in your monitor? Are there any...

    Rapid Sequence Intubation

Everywhere in our policy and procedure manual, as well as every memo titles it Rapid Sequence Intubation. Our Clinical program has 100% QA on every single chart, not just RSI... ALS, BLS, SCTU, Non-Emergent BLS, everything is QA'd. For every RSI we do, it requires a special form to fill...

    Rapid Sequence Intubation

I'm just curious to see what the different RSI protocols for various ALS projects... Medical vs Trauma, etc... My company started using RSI almost 2 years ago, and the success rate is still in the high 90% range... Every experience I've had with it turned out pretty well... First RSI was on...

Paramedic school and the real world

The paramedic program I went through was 3 nights a week, from 1900 - 2200, from Sept. To June. After that we had our Hospital rotations, about 400 hrs, and then our truck rotations, about 440 hours... My Full-time work schedule is wed - sat, 0600-1800, So I was able to fit everything in.
