    My dilemma

How do you get along with crews when they come into your ED? How does your ED treat crews in general? EMS is a small world and people talk. If there is no issue then start networking with the crews. Simply BS'ing and finding out the lowdown on hiring could be invaluable.

    Fentanyl; Why even carry Morphine?

Never understood that, "Only 5 mins out," nonsense. You wouldn't with hold oxygen since you are only "5 out." I agree, you can help, so why not? People seem to forget that the pt has to be evaluated and orders given before they recieve pain management at the ED. That is most assuredly going...

    Shifts in California? Hours?

By BLS I mean a transfer type business, non 911. They may also do ALS transfers, however. You are right, the terminology is different region to region. I didn't realize it myself until perusing this website.

    Pay decrease?

Only you can decide whats best for your family. I wouldn't take that kind of hit to be an EMT. Maybe you can work PT, get some experience, and see if its for you.

    Shifts in California? Hours?

Where are you looking that is rural around the SF bay area? Sadly, dual medic units are losing ground to emt/medic meaning that ALS experience is possible. In Contra Costa, BLS cannot respond to 911 calls unless an ALS unit is already on scene and they are called for additional resources, eg...

    patient to gurney

After reading your post, I re-read the OP and think you are correct. In that situation, no way am I walking him. Stair chair is just the ticket here.

    patient to gurney

With the limited info given, I would not have walked him. I base this on the fact that he is being flown due to his head injury. That in of itself would lead me to believe it is of a fairly serious nature. That said, if you saw him walk with a steady gait, then there did not seem to be an issue...

    Basic to Medic no break?

Being an EMT if only for a short while gives one the experience of dealing with patients, family, co-workers, other medical staff, different scene dynamics, how to manuever a gurney, getting patients out of homes/facilities, paperwork, hospital ringdowns, etc. My job as a preceptor is not to...

    Basic to Medic no break?

Field experience probably makes little difference for most in the classroom. However, once in the internship, it makes all the difference. The interns with little to no experience struggle once on the bus. There may be exceptions but, they are few and far between.

    Shifts in California? Hours?

Mostly 10, 12, and the ever disappearring 24. Contra Costa, my county, is not hiring at all, ALS or BLS. The BLS emt's just took a 15% pay cut and 10% more next month. Mostly do to losing the Kaiser contract. P Plus may be hiring and possibly Rural Metro. Your best bet is a small shop just to...

    Using EMT Skills off-duty

If you really feel the pressing need to stop, I suggest walking up, if the scene is safe which they generally never are, and advising that you have called 911. I wouldn't want some stranger claiming to be an EMT pawing my family members in an attempt to assess them and surely others feel the...

    Service Dog in Ambulance

Per my company policy (AMR), the dogs go unless the pt is unresponsive and therefore the handler cannot control the animal.

It feels like I'm stuck in a rut.

Keep at it, man. You could also look into ER tech positions to "sweeten" your resume. As far as experience, it helps tremendously, even BLS. I have precepted for 13 years and the only fails I have had are those without experience. Those with are far better prepared than those without. Good luck.

Why are Paramedics paid so little?

Pay will vary with location. I work in the bay area of N. California and with minimal OT 100k+ is easy to do.
