    Working in Canada

Probably not, a classmate of mine has OFA III from BC (with work experience) and she had to take her EMR before going onto EMT here in Alberta. I don't know if your First Aid 3 would be of any use in BC, you'd have to contact their provincial licensing body. Shifts are different everywhere...

    Working in Canada

I don't know whether it'd be possible for you to transfer any of your education from South Africa to here. If you have to start from scratch, you will need to get a Standard First Aid/CPR Healthcare provider certificate, which is about $100-150. Then you will have to take an EMR (Emergency...

What Do You Think the Things I Will Need for my EMT-B Class????

I didn't buy anything for EMT-B. I bought a penlight and a stethoscope for EMT-A, but I'm also working now, so it's something I'm actually using at work. I thought I couldn't auscultate properly until I got my own stethoscope. I thought I was an idiot, but it turned out all the school...

    EMT T-Shirt

There's a mentally handicapped guy at a mall where my classmates and I frequently have lunch, he always wants to join us. One day he was like, "yeah, I've got an EMT uniform, too, I just forgot it at home!" We were like, uh huh *polite smile.* Next day he shows up in the exact same EMS t-shirt...

    100% Directionless Thread

Hell yeah! I was doing an IV on this chick in class today and she said I'm the first person in SIX WEEKS to get an IV in on her! That's all.

    Treatment off duty

It's just titles. EMT in AB is PRIMARY CARE paramedic in ON or BC. The scopes of practice are fairly close, it's just the names that are different. Our Alberta paramedics (EMT-Ps) are the equivalent of ACP in ON, BC, and elsewhere. Just like our EMRs are the equivalent of EMT-Bs in the US, etc.

    Treatment off duty

From what I know, here in AB you can only practice as a first aider when you are off duty, whether you're an EMT, nurse, or neurosurgeon. It's not like yo can do a whole lot without your ambulance, anyway (or, let's face it, with it in many situations, at least as an EMT/PCP). You also cannot be...

EMT Training in Ontario will it be sufficient for Alberta?

They like to say that we have the broadest scope of practice for PCPs/EMTs in AB. The only other PCP/EMT I know well lives in BC, and their scope is quite different. They can't even use an NPA - we did NPAs as EMRs, and now as EMTs we also have Combitubes, LMAs, and Kings in addition to the OPAs...

    Need to know....

No....just "cleaning." Sometimes I forget I'm training to be a janitor, you see.

    Need to know....

I just got the definition of "cleaning" wrong on a practice exam...do I really NEED to know that?

    Rural EMS Response Times

75 miles to trauma center here, 150 to tertiary....takes STARS 45 minutes to get out here. ALS intercept is about 20 minutes if both of us are flying at 90 mph towards each other (not in the wintertime). Basically, if you have a life-threatening emergency that cannot be managed by BLS...

    Ride Time

I've got a white cloud. The 2nd day of my shift is now over the hump and still not a single call....lol.-_-

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

Yaaay, I passed! Got the news in 2.5 weeks...they said 4 to 6! Now I only need to drive 95% of the time as opposed to 100%! LOL.

What are we attracting to enter EMS?

The thing that amazes me the most is that some people are horrified by the sight of blood. I had a LOT of that in my EMT-B/EMR class, but that was a bit more excusable, since many students simply needed the class to go into fire, so their contact with blood would probably be limited to the...

    Studying techniques anyone??

Use all aspects of your memory - write stuff out, say it outloud, look at it on flashcards. The one technique that always worked for me was to read whatever I absolutely needed to remember before bed the night before the exam and then read it again on the day of the exam. It beats reading...

    Prior to starting EMT Basics...

I thought EMT-B/EMR anatomy was extremely superficial. Even my EMT/EMT-I anatomy lectures are nowhere near as in depth as my undergrad A&P stuff, so I wouldn't bother cramming all the info from an undergrad A&P textbook into your head. My biggest advice for EMR/EMT-B is to simply keep up...

    Self protection question

Oh, I just remembered, we have an Indian reserve here where they give medics bullet-resistant (not -proof.) vests...but you don't have to wear them to every call. There's a lot of violent crime on that rez, so it's an exception to the rule.

    Being an EMT is scary!

I'm more afraid of getting stabbed or beat up than catching a disease, to be honest. Seems like a much more plausible outcome.
