Biggest problem at the EMT(BLS) Level?

Just wondering what the biggest problems my fellow EMTs feel affect the EMT level of care. Personally I feel that EMT-Basic has too basic of a scope. Shouldn't we be able to use CPAP, pull 12 leads, give Narcan, have our own supply of NTG and ASA, drop Kings/LMAs, amongst other things? I...

    Overdose or Seizure?

Sad thing is most EMTs and medics are seasoned way too fast. My main squad that I volunteer with is mainly all paid, and the other EMTs there are almost all seasoned. One just has to try their hardest to treat all patients like they would want their family treated in the same situation, and to...

Anyone have info on becoming an ED tech?

If you want to become an ER tech, it helps to do one of those short classes to get yourself certified as a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, and EKG tech. Having that along with EMT got me in as a tech on the first interview.

    Overdose or Seizure?

Some medics are biased. If the pt. denies overdose, and you have nothing else to support the theory of OD, then you treat what has the highest level of suspicion/what is presenting to you. Typically ETOH/Opioid OD would present with marked AMS, and usually resp depression, so absent that, I...

    Oxygen

If they could benefit from O2, why not? You are not going to hurt them by giving them high flow O2 en route to the hospital. If they coulda used it, but didnt get it, you are likely liable because of standards of care. My way of looking at it is, it cannot hurt at all, so why not try?

    dizziness and ALS criteria

You are the EMT. It is up to you. If you dont feel like they are ALS level patients based on your experience, then recall ALS if you are comfortable doing that. We all have our own way of doing things, but personally I end up recalling ALS 80% of they time that they are dispatched.

    Ekgs on the bls level

EMTs should learn basic arrhythmia recognition anyways, but so what if you give them an EKG printout. Maybe they already know what they are looking at and are trying to figure out what is going on with their patient. I always look at EKGs, and and labs that I can to learn how to figure out what...
