Hey yall. I want to know what you define as a great EMT or the "ultimate EMT". Me- The EMT who knows when it is okay to cry over a patient, but still remembers to laugh at the good times. Someone who enjoys the job everyday, but also remembers the importance of each call.

PS. The field is very different than classroom shiz most of the time. Protocol is often bent for the sake of the patient. You can't plan for every scenario. This is where the "6th sense" and personal ability to make clear judgments of the EMT are key....nonetheless, again, vitals should always...

Basic vitals should ALWAYS be taken at some point or another. You need at least one set of base vitals to at least compare to or give to the hospital. Now, I've been on calls where I've never taken the bp, but I've never taken a call when I didn't check pulse, respirations, LOC, and pupils...

My dad is a former FF-medic. My grandfather was a FF for 40 years. My mom used to be a midwife and now a social worker. And if it means anything, my sister and brother-in-law were in a medic unit for the military for a little while before being moved to Chem Core.

Cloth bag is what we use on our rigs for the most part. We do have some hard cases. I personally use cloth bags. I have 3 kits with me in my car: 1 trauma bag, 1 small medical bag, and a specialty kit (contains specific stuff for pediatrics, burns, airways, etc)

We teach something like that here. It's ABCS- airway, breathing, circulation, spine/stabilization. Optional though.

Eh...we've had local schools close around here temporarily and had a pt in a local county (young kid) stop breathing from it, but we're not too concerned. We're highly encouraged to get the shot, but it can't be forced. We do get it free at my school if we want it though. I personally don't see...
