    The Ultimate EMT

Hey yall. I want to know what you define as a great EMT or the "ultimate EMT". Me- The EMT who knows when it is okay to cry over a patient, but still remembers to laugh at the good times. Someone who enjoys the job everyday, but also remembers the importance of each call.

    You know your an EMT....

HAHAHAHAHA 1. I agree. I enjoy Trauma sometimes, but I drive my friends crazy. 2. I have kicked my fiance out onto the couch for being more of a critic than I (he is a EMT-P/FF already) 3. Yes...you know you are an EMT when you get on here to talk about knowing you are an EMT. lol

    Protocol V. On-Scene Judgement Calls

PS. The field is very different than classroom shiz most of the time. Protocol is often bent for the sake of the patient. You can't plan for every scenario. This is where the "6th sense" and personal ability to make clear judgments of the EMT are key....nonetheless, again, vitals should always...

    Protocol V. On-Scene Judgement Calls

Basic vitals should ALWAYS be taken at some point or another. You need at least one set of base vitals to at least compare to or give to the hospital. Now, I've been on calls where I've never taken the bp, but I've never taken a call when I didn't check pulse, respirations, LOC, and pupils...

    Hardest part of EMS

Thank you Ryan and bunkie. I really appreciate the condolences and advice. I've lost 2 to this war so far and so of course I'm a little edgy. We do plan to enjoy our holidays together and my birthday (the day he leaves is the same day) and we're enjoying the presence of family right now. There...

    The "Whacker" in You

I'm a horrible whacker LOL. Because our stations are spread out, we normally don't have an issue covering our area. But, of course, I just happen to live in the outermost circle of town so it takes the longest for anyone to get to us. Therefore, many times I'm requested to respond and allow the...

    Are You A "Heritage EMT"?

My dad is a former FF-medic. My grandfather was a FF for 40 years. My mom used to be a midwife and now a social worker. And if it means anything, my sister and brother-in-law were in a medic unit for the military for a little while before being moved to Chem Core.

    Hardest part of EMS

Hey. You know, any vet knows that you have you your good days and your bad days. Calls can go from one end to the other end of the spectrum in a matter of hours. I saw that there was a "Best part of EMS is..." topic, but I want to know what you think is the darker side of EMS is. "Your least...

    Jump Kits!

Cloth bag is what we use on our rigs for the most part. We do have some hard cases. I personally use cloth bags. I have 3 kits with me in my car: 1 trauma bag, 1 small medical bag, and a specialty kit (contains specific stuff for pediatrics, burns, airways, etc)

    You know your an EMT....

    * Your personal jump kit is better equipped than the one in your ambulance. hahaha yup * You can tell it's a full moon without looking at the calendar. oh yessss * You drive past the ER ambulance bay just to see who's busy today. haha gotta admit...i've done it lol * You find humor in...

    Organ Donation?

Eh...IDK yet. I'm thinking I may get it put on my license next time I have reason to go down to the DMV and just sign the papers. I ahve no use for them, but then again, I kinda wanted to be buried whole...with everything still inside me... We'll see :)

Email from NREMT about Swine flu?!

oh for goodness sake. i know this is old and things have changed but... nice of them to care and send that out, but really? i mean come on. realllly??? *rolls eyes* LOL  so basically use BSI and PPE, wash your hands a lot, carry microbacterial hand sanitizer, and get the vac. wow.

    swine flu--is anyone concerned?

And that is the ONLY difference. More contagious, but not necessarily more dangerous. EVERY virus can, and probably will, mutate. Swine flu and the seasonal flu are no exceptions of course. But truth be told, BSI takes care of most things and honestly, flu cases are not super duper abundant for...

    Realistically, take c-spine for everything?

We teach something like that here. It's ABCS- airway, breathing, circulation, spine/stabilization. Optional though.

    swine flu--is anyone concerned?

Eh...we've had local schools close around here temporarily and had a pt in a local county (young kid) stop breathing from it, but we're not too concerned. We're highly encouraged to get the shot, but it can't be forced. We do get it free at my school if we want it though. I personally don't see...
