Michigan Members: Island City Area EMS

Sorry, but that's a horrible idea. I'm from Lansing. The Greater Lansing Area is covered by two entities. The first is the Fire Service. Lansing Township Fire, and Lansing Fire. Both are Fire-based EMS that HIRE ONLY PARAMEDIC FIREFIGHTERS. The only other service in the actual Lansing area is...

    Michigan: Where are we hiring

Well, it's true, there aren't a lot of opportunities for EMTs east/north of Lansing. If you really want a decent job as a Basic, you may have to make a bit of a move. I had to. But I'm just letting you know that there are places in Michigan where companies are growing/changing so rapidly that...

Do you remember your ride alongs?

Ride-alongs are with EMS on the road, clinicals are in the hospitals with the nurses. And yes, I remember all of mine. Hell, they were only 2 years ago.

    Ketamine

Ketamine. Great for kids needing RSI...and horses.

    Advice..

I heard that plenty of times when I was in paramedic school. "This isn't a profession for wallflowers." "Maybe you should consider a different profession." I told them I wasn't going to give up. I didn't. I'm doing fine. Confidence comes with experience.

Michigan Members: Island City Area EMS

Never heard of them. Ever. But if you want to ask about anything from around Mid-Michigan to the Southwest, I'm on it.

    Michigan: Where are we hiring

Calhoun and Branch county. Kalamazoo as well. Ingham is fire. Washtenaw is limited. Much of the east is fire, and limited opportunities in the north. In other words, the Southwest. I believe LifeCare in Calhoun just hired many new basics AND medics. Pride and Life in Kalamazoo often have...

Another Show About Paramedics: The Listener

I never found Third Watch to be a whacker show. It's actually pretty solid, the small parts involving the medics that actually make it into the episodes.

    Alcohol Prep For Nausea

I'll tell you what DOESN'T work. Smelling Ammonia Inhalants. Alcohol? Strange theory. I think I'll just opt for the extra couple of dollars and use Zofran.

    Education Considered in Hiring?

Usually. Everyone wants a smart employee.

    Has It Been A Waste?

I'm actually feeling a lot better after doing some research. It turns out there is a respectable medical profession within reach of a paramedic. It's called a PA. Honestly, it's not that I don't love being a Paramedic. It's just that I wont feel fulfilled being JUST a paramedic. I need to keep...

    Has It Been A Waste?

Community College, and it was about 10k. My issue is that I will never ever feel fulfilled as a Paramedic. Not in any way. I need more, and I need to keep moving. And I am very discouraged by how both schools and employers regard the time spent being a Paramedic and training to be a Paramedic...

    Has It Been A Waste?

And if you don't want to be a firefighter? I certainly don't. I got into this because of medicine, stupidly enough. But your second point brings me back to mine. I STILL haven't made enough money as a Paramedic to pay for the education it took to get the job.

    Has It Been A Waste?

But really, is the education to become a Paramedic really worth anything anywhere else? Not really. Three years of specialized classes that don't mean anything to others once you want to move on. Besides, everyone thinks you're just the equivalent to a Taxi driver anyway.

Have any of you seen a person revived with CPR ONLY, no AED?

Yes, with CPR so passionate that it was like a series of precordial thumps. Witnessed, of course.

    Has It Been A Waste?

Very general question here (for Paramedics). Do you ever feel like it's been a waste of time to spend three years taking full-time courses in college to make less than 30,000 dollars a year when those with a GED can make twice that working on an assembly line?

    Practicing IV cannulation.

Usually you learn by starting IVs on other students. Best way. And don't be nervous. I went into Paramedic school passing out at the thought of blood. Now I actually kinda like getting IVs.

    Question on your IV method?

My partner taught me to bend the IV catheters into an angle before insertion. Scared me to death when he did it the first few times. I was horrified. But alas, it works well. I don't suggest anyone else do it. I certainly don't. Too scared.

Bad Day. Weird Day. Series of Bad Events..

We were sitting post and got moved by dispatch because our second truck took a call. My partner started to get up out of the back and come drive (she had gone back there to sleep), but I told her to stay back there - I'd drive. So she stayed back there, and I took off. Was in town and almost...

    EMS Crewing Levels 1, 2, 3.....?

Not directly related to the question, but the title of the thread reminded me of the system the company I work for does things. Level 1 is Basic Level 2 is New Medic Level 3 is Experienced Medic. And a truck has to equal 4 or more. Which means a 3 and a 1, two 2's, 2 and 3, or 3 and 3. No 1...
