    Orientation by region

Denver. 2-week academy (I think, it's changed since I was hired). Then the field training program is broken into medical and driving phases. There's 3 stages to medical and 2 to driving. During the medical phase, you only attend. There's no set lengths, it depends on the individuals. 4 months...

    Falck EMS Aurora Colorado

Denver Fire is all BLS first response. We do all the ALS. Overall rapport is very good, I have no issues with them. From what I hear from some of the older medics, it's the best it's ever been. We have lieutenants as field command staff, at least 2 on the streets at any given time. There's...

    Falck EMS Aurora Colorado

Yes, starting pay is DOE- in fact, to some extent, you do better coming in with experience than if you started right out of school. Pretty much everything is 10-hour shifts. The one exception is our Englewood ambulances, which run 12-hour shifts out of DFD Stations 37 and 38. OT is over 40 in a...

    Falck EMS Aurora Colorado

Thanks for the mention. I wouldn't bother with Falck. It's a terrible system to work in. The Falck management used to be the Rural/Metro management when I worked there. I've not heard any reason to believe that they would be any better towards their employees now than they were then. Denver...

    P.A. ALS intervention study

That's 2 minutes you're delaying definitive care, in one of the few cases minutes matter. Besides, it's not THAT hard to get an IV in a moving ambulance.

    P.A. ALS intervention study

It seems weird that they need to study this. Our priority for these patients is always short scene times/rapid transport to a trauma center with management as needed en route. We actually just had some training with our trauma surgeons, and they flat out said that they'd rather have a patient...

    Ambulance Ops

We don't even do that! Used to be part of our contract with EVMARS that they would do it and now EVMARS is actually becoming part of Denver Health. Of course, I can count on one hand the number of times chains would have been even remotely helpful in the city.

    EMT student Colorado

You might get hired without the IV cert, but odds are it would be for a wheelchair van position. Maybe a BLS interfacility ambulance... Nearly everyone you'll be competing for jobs with will have their IV cert and you're really handicapping yourself if you don't do it.

Why isn't blood plasma used in pre-hospital in the US anymore?

According to the trauma service, freeze-dried plasma is where there hoping to go next if the COMBAT/FFP study has positive results.

Why isn't blood plasma used in pre-hospital in the US anymore?

One interesting comparison for the COMBAT study versus the fresh plasma mentioned in the podcast... our FFP is 500 mL frozen in a 2 L bag, so it's flat with a lot of surface area. We can thaw one unit in a plasmatherm in 3 minutes, 20 seconds and a second in another 3:20.

Why isn't blood plasma used in pre-hospital in the US anymore?

Definitely a benefit of being part of the hospital.

Why isn't blood plasma used in pre-hospital in the US anymore?

We're part of a study on carrying and administering fresh frozen plasma on the ambulance. We're 2 years in and there's another year to go. I know the trauma surgeons are really excited about it, but I don't have any idea what preliminary results have been like. COMBAT Study-...

    Denver EMS Bases.

Denver Health ambulances are dynamically deployed throughout the city (plus Glendale and Sheridan*), based on coverage needs. That looks like a somewhat out of date post list. I don't know of any ambulances based out of Rose. *Our Englewood ambulances are based at the 2 fire stations taken over...

License to practice in all states?

When I've been deployed on wildland fires, I've provided the medical unit leader with a copy of my current state certification. There's a process the med unit leader goes through with the state EMS office, but for the most part it's along the lines of- "Hey here's a list of who is working for me...

    Denver Paramedics New Ambulance?

I've never been able to stand in any other ambulance I've worked in either. And I can recline my seat all the way back because the cab extends into the box.
