    Vacation to Canada

I'd drive up to Torino and go wale watching, surfing, and beach combing. It's a little over 4hrs drive through the mountains, but its beautiful up that way. For reference, the first two seasons of History Channel's 'Alone' was filmed just north of there.

    EMS and ladder trucks

@the OP, prior to entering EMS I was unaware of dual-service departments. I had the opportunity to complete my clinical with one and was truly amazed at the quality of patient care they are able to provide. Your situation highlights one of an infinite possibilities where a disconnected EMS /...

    Rosen's vs. Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine?

@EpiEMS - This is for class but I had been thinking about getting one of these for a while now to go deeper than my current text collection can offer. Nothing like school to force your hand in shelling out the pesos. :S I did find a Reddit thread on these two texts. Those posting seem to...

    Rosen's vs. Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine?

Does anyone have experience with the newer versions (2013 or newer)? I was able to flip through Tintinalli's today and found it to be a solid reference manual format but not much of a page turner. I hear Rosen's is a better read but reviews of the older versions criticize it for being...

Got Licensed Almost a Year Ago...Still Unemployed

@NomadicMedic Those organizations carry insurance for their members and are good opportunities - yes. I interpreted the Drax's suggestion to be as volunteering with a 'traditional' EMS agency. I've been turned down in the past and the reason cited was insurance / liability. @ the OP - the...

Got Licensed Almost a Year Ago...Still Unemployed

I'm not sure where the OP is located, but many services do not accept volunteers due to "insurance concerns". The position being that you need to be an employee to be insured. Even students need to be insured by their training institution.

    This makes me sick.

http://heavy.com/news/2017/05/marinna-rollins-dead-suicide-boyfriend-jarren-heng-killed-shot-dog-cam-full-video-facebook-photos/ In this line of work it's only a matter of time until we see some pretty disturbing stuff. I'm just wondering how everyone else deals with acts of immorality? My...

    Dopamine in Sepsis?

According to the video below, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign protocols cite hypotensive management priority as Norepinepherine, Vasopressin, then Epinepherine, and Dopamine ONLY indicated in patients at low risk of tachydysrhymias. They also cite doBUTamine as possibly exacerbating...

    Paramedic in U.S. to Canada

Ah Victoria... "The newly wed or nearly dead." It has a large retirement community and in recent years has attracted younger BC residents who no longer can afford to live in the lower mainland due to skyrocketing property values.

    Scenario - For students

I figured out my error - "End tidal partial pressure of CO2 (ETCO2) is a physiological surrogate for vascular obstruction from PE. Pulmonary thromboembolism results in dead space ventilation and therefore prevents meaningful gas exchange in the subtended lung unit, yielding an alveolar CO2...

    Scenario - For students

What's the Pt's BP? Any pain? 1. PE (Low ETCO2 is throwing me off here - if V/Q mismatch, I would expect high ETCO2 + low SPO2) 2. Thoracic or Aortic Dissection (Symoathetic response for absolute hypovolemic state; no hemoglobin to transport O2 and low CO2 b/c transported via bicarbonate...

    Trauma Physiology Text?

Can anyone recommend a good trauma physiology/pathophysiology text? I'm interested in learning more about things like the cellular and systemic effects crush syndrome and its corresponding treatment. Thanks, - C

    Can I perform ALS interventions?

Most jurisdictions have legislation that states your assistance is limited to standard first aid. I've also seen legislation that allows volunteer organizations who lack medical control to perform ALS interventions, but their protocols include more contraindications and are already outlined and...

Tibial IO Access Efficacy in Cardiac Arrest

What I find odd is when I participated in an Ez-IO cadaver lab, I observed near instantaneous inflation of the R. Subclavian on injection of a 10ml NaCl bolus via the proximal humoral site. Since cadavers are the 'final stage' of cardiac arrest, I'm wondering how there could be low serum...

    Pathophysiology book

I really like my Pathiphysiology for the Health Professionals. It's a good reference guide and is organized well. Each chapter begins with a review and there are ongoing study questions. I also use Costanzos Physiology textbook to help dive deeper into some of the etiology...

    Timing of ketamine vs. rocuronium

My knee-jerk reaction is that if we feel the need to accept control of the airway, it's in the patient's best interest to do so sooner than later. I believe most practitioners use the approach to first look for reasons NOT to ET someone, but if it's indicted and a less-invasive airway...

    Paramedic Law Suits

If I'm being honest, one of my greatest fears is being on the receiving end of a frivolous law suit. It seems everyone has a Google MD, and in this highly litigious world, the door is wide open for someone to drag you through the mud, even if you did your job 100% correctly. It'll be up to you...
