How are roads on your side? They did a horrible job clearing roads on this side of the peninsula. I'm hoping tonight we don't have the obligatory round of bumper cars on our bridges.

    Christmas Presents

I love my foxfire band... It's the only thing I've really bought for my fire gear. The instructors in our classes always go nuts over them.

Dispatch and effective handling of "where are they coming from?"

I remember the first time I had one of those, and I totally lost control of the call. These days I usually use some phrasing along the line of "I'm getting paramedics to come and help you, but I need you to stop somewhere to meet them". I'll then suggest some common spots along the way...

Dispatch and effective handling of "where are they coming from?"

If callers ask for it, I tend to give it to them. I view it as their right to know where the crew is coming from, and that they're on their way. It's doubly true in areas where we have a 20+ minute response time, or when units are responding outside of their usual area because we are overloaded...

We die a little too... Disp: "Is anyone injured?" Caller: "Nah, we're all right" (murmuring with friends in the background) Caller: "Wait my friends, neck is hurting real bad..." Same thing for sick person: Disp: "Tell me exactly what happened?" Caller: I'm dying...Quit asking me...

Is there really a need to make sure the medic talks down to me and stroke his ego over the radio? At least it was better then them telling me how to do my job, which is usually the norm.

In Mass Attacks, New Advice Lets Medics Rush In

The problem is PD still really has little to no concept of NIMS and ICS. The USFA and FEMA seem to forget that LEO's aren't being taught it... I just took a quick survey among the LEO's on duty here, and none have ever taken a NIMS class or have been introduced to it. That includes veterans and...

In Mass Attacks, New Advice Lets Medics Rush In

Unfortunately most of that was due to the #1 problems in these situations: Poor Communications. FD/EMS were sitting in the parking lot waiting for patients, and officers on scene were not aware they were on scene at all. Changes in tactics released in these types of documents don't mean jack...

    Record High/Lows

I don't know the exact number, but when my father-in-law went in for CHF, it took 12 hrs before they could even read a blood pressure in the ER.

A traditional active shooter is one thing... You generally are going to have a single direction attack. But the second explosive are involved the game changes... Secondary devices, NBC agents, structural hazards, etc. That just creates more victims.

Don't get me wrong when you're on scene as a provider or officer you have control of that scene, but the comm center has control of the county. Don't demand I move equipment When I have a better understanding of the big picture than you do... Don't think you can respond to calls after your...

    NYT Article on EMS Billing

Reading the comments was pretty shocking. Especially the guy complaining about his bill for the MI. I understand people feeling pressured to be transported. Is it deliberate? No, but they get caught up in the moment, and they don't necessarily think logically. I just find it fascinating how...

Not really sure beyond, that we can "contain" the spills until their crew get there. That stuff is worse than black ice.

We get called out for washdowns from the rendering plant trucks... Absolutely sickening. Even worse, since we can't even wash it off, we get to spend an hour babysitting the stuff till their cleanup crews with their own chemical sludge come out and scrape it off.
