    Cardiac Associated Symptoms

But, can't I still use my monitor? It does have batteries, after all.

    Medics pull over DUI suspect

I understand being concerned the driver was going to hurt someone, but that's not my job. Given the fact that traffic stops are one of, if not the most, dangerous things cops have to do, I will leave that to them. Get on the radio, ask for the cops, give a location so they can find you...

    What is your transition plan?

Our state wrote a letter detailing how our current Paramedic courses meet or exceed the minimum requirements for the transition, and therefore, no additional training is required. I just had to include a copy of the letter when it was time for me to recertify.

    Time spent on scene

I prefer to stay on scene and do a good assessment, and get some things started, when it is appropriate. I have found that most people are most comfortable in their own home, and it just makes it easier to get things done if they are a little bit less nervous. There are always exceptions that...

Satire - NY State Scraps EMS Program

It may be satire, but there are lots of valid points in that piece of writing.

Sometimes you just have to play that game. Been there, done that, but with a family member instead of a patient at work. It was my husband's grandmother. She had a UTI, couldn't even get herself out of her chair to eat or use the bathroom, was well on her way to becoming septic, and...

What AED/Monitor does your service use?

Fulltime job is an old Zoll that is bare bones - only 3 leads and a pulse ox, along with the regular monitor capabilities. They keep saying they are going to upgrade to 12-leads, but I've been there almost a year and have yet to see any progress in that direction. My part time job uses LP15s...

The nice things a patient will do.

I think the best food that we ever had sent to the fire house was after a cardiac arrest. Even though the patient didn't survive, the family was so thankful that they stopped by one day to find out when our crew was working again. Our next shift, they showed up that morning with a fresh salad...

Apparently, that kid I had that was in the MVC this morning has confirmed spinal, skull, facial, rib, and pelvis fractures. I have no idea about any injury to organs, with the exception of a brain injury.

It's official, those clouds up there are as black as can be. 16yo male, unrestrained passenger who took the full impact into a tree. Bleeding from the ears, depressed skull fracture, and blood in his urine. We were about an hour from the closest Level I, and all the birds were grounded...

    Traction Splint Relieving Pain

I personally can't answer your question, but I can tell you that the one isolated femur fracture patient that I've had said his pain decreased significantly once traction was applied. In fact, he went from "don't even look at my leg, let alone touch it" to "let's get in the ambulance and get...

I refuse to believe those clouds around me are getting darker. At a service that is rather slow (2-3 runs/truck/24 hr shift), we flew out another one after he connected with 2 trees and then rolled 3-4 times. A few hours later, we picked up the guy who decided swallowing 2 grams of meth...

I think I am in the area of a very dark grey cloud... Fall down the stairs resulting in a broken arm and an open book fracture of the pelvis. That was followed by a 2-car PI. Where we couldn't even tell what one of the vehicles had been. We flew one of the two drivers out. Those were...

would you backboard a patient punched in the head?

Naturally! You just never know when hypoglycemia is going to cause someone to fall into another person's fist. We might as well get a 12-lead too! (You know, for when the BGL is normal.)

Ditto this. My medic program was structured in the same manner. The further you got into the program, the more you were able to do because skills were added along the way as we finished each block.
